Hessen Minister President Volker Bouffier recognized several U.S. military civilians and an American Soldier during the annual Hessentag celebration, this year in Bensheim, June 6-15.
SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – Fifteen Soldiers, from the 25th Infantry Division, were honored for their contributions and selfless service during a retirement ceremony Dec. 4 at Sgt. Smith Theater on Schofield Barracks. The hosts for the event were Col. David B. Womack and Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey D. Sweezer, 2nd Brigade Combat Team command team. On behalf of the 2nd Bde. Combat Team and the 25th Inf. Div. we would like to say thank you for your wonderful service and a job well done.

Outstanding Soldiers and civilian employees were recognized during the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden All-Hands Assembly March 28, 2014.
Dylan Van Rooyen, a selfless volunteer in Surrey, is presented with BC’s newest honour on May 31st, 2016. Van Rooyen is a firefighter whose inspirational leadership and involvement with many organizations and events centres on helping Surrey youth and families. His service to community includes countless hours volunteering at organizations like the Child Development Foundation of British Columbia, Tong Louie Family YMCA, Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society as a director and committee member of its charity golf tournament and Leave a Legacy group.

My grandmother was goodness personified. Never have I met a more patient, honest, giving and selfless human. She never sat still, and all of her efforts were for others - yet, I never heard her complain or say a negative comment about anyone. The only time she spoke of others was, "Oh, isn't she darling?" or "Wasn't he wonderful?"
As a teenager, her father died while on duty for the San Francisco Fire Department. As the eldest sister of seven children, she began working to support her mother and her siblings after her father's death. Her younger brothers and sisters would later speak about how she took them to the theater, restaurants and showed them around their city, San Francisco. She later she worked as an assistant to one of San Francisco's mayors.
Yet, everytime I asked grandma to tell me about the "olden days," she would tell me stories about my mom as a little girl or how my uncle got stuck on the boulder on 19th Avenue as a little kid. The stories were never about her.
Whenever our family gathered around her delicious food on my grandparents' diningroom table, grandma was always interrupted by someone else more boisterous. Her voice would fade off in the distance.
Even as an adult, when I would visit her apartment, after grandpa died, our conversations always revolved around me, my daughter, my sister, my mother...what was on sale at the market or on TV the night before.
So I could only sob at her funeral, while listening to her life unfold through a eulogy, sounding like an unread biography - her teen years growing up in San Francisco's Cow Hollow; her working years and how my suave Irish grandpa swept her off her feet with tales of his little yellow airplane...which never really existed. Yet, he charmed her still.
But those were stories I'd never hear from her. I regret that.

“The Commander’s Award for Public Service” is presented to Mrs. Stacy Jarvis and Ms. Rachel Oldfield for selfless service to the Soldiers and families of the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment and the United States Army Alaska.
The award was approved by the Commander of the U.S. Army Alaska Aviation Task Force, Col. Nick Snelson, and by the Commander of the 1-52nd Aviation Regiment, Lt. Col. Thomas J. Barrett.
Mrs. Stacy Jarvis and Ms. Rachel Oldfield provided snacks, hot beverages and smiles, to Soldiers while waiting for deployment transportation as Soldiers returned from their recent tour in Afghanistan. Their dedication was said to have been truly amazing, and their efforts were greatly appreciated. They were both recognized for their public service Dec. 10, 2014, at the Last Frontier Community Activity Center at Fort Wainwright by Maj. Gen. Michael H. My dad – truly one of the good guys, and probably the kindest and most selfless person I’ll ever know. I’m lucky to have him as a father.
Here he is on the Oregon Coast near Coos Bay, where his father was raised, on a trip we took for Father’s Day in 2023 to visit cousins who he hadn’t seen in over 50 years, and who I’d never met. Seva an act of performing selfless service is an important aspect of the sikh religion. Devotees engage in this free service in Gurudwaras washing vessels, cleaning floors, polishing shoes of the other devotees etc. Some volunteer to work in local hospitals, community centers etc to help the community.The person performing this service is called a Sevadar. Location - Sri Harmandir Sahib ( Golden Temple ), Amritsar Punjab,India.

From Rome, Vincenzo Pallotti worked selflessly looking after the poor in the urban areas of the city for most of his life. He had an intense devotion to the mystery of the Most Blessed Trinity, and to the Virgin Mary. His contemporaries, including the pope, considered him a saint during his life. He longed to send missionaries to other parts of the world and founded the Union of Catholic Apostolate, the Society of the Catholic Apostolate that became the Pious Society of Missions. He strongly believed, in the spirit of St. Paul, that God wanted to save all people, and it was his intention to start a Catholic Apostolic Society. Although his visionary desire to unite the factions in the Church and to encourage lay apostolic activity did not bear fruit within his lifetime, he did his utmost to encourage this vision in others. Pallotti was in fact deemed a patron of Vatican II for his efforts toward building unity in the Church through such practices as inviting the people of his community to worship in the Roman parishes of Eastern Catholic Churches.
It does appear that his 'Society of the Catholic Apostolate' was suppressed by Pope Gregory. It offended some of the sensibilities of Roman society. Dr. Gaynor seems to suggest that the Jansenists were at work in this. The Decree of dissolution fell into disuse (went into limbo), when the Pope was enlightened as to the good work done by the Society. However, as soon as Vincent died in 1850 there was more trouble and presumably the original Decree of dissolition was unearthed. When Vincent's last defender Cardinal Lambruscini died in 1854, the name of the Society was abruptly changed to "The Pious Society of Missions". This lasted until 1947 when "by a gracious act of the Holy See" the original name of the society was restored.
When Pallotti's body was exhumed in 1906 and 1950, examiners found his body to be completely incorrupt[citation needed] (see Dr. Gaynor's book), a sign of holiness in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. His body is enshrined in the church of San Salvatore in Onda, in Rome, where it can be seen, still intact. He was canonized in the year 1963 by Pope John XXIII.[1]
His followers are the Pallottines, still operating internationally. They follow his motto, "The love of Christ impels us" (Caritas Christi Urget Nos). Members of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate work as everyday missionaries to "renew faith and rekindle love." They work to fulfill the mission of their founder in the modern world. The Pallottines have major houses in Britain, Germany, New York, Poland, India, Ireland and several other locations.
During the Christmas Season, a Nativity scene that Saint Vincent himself made is put on display at the Vatican, in the Basilica's Square, before the Christmas Tree. Vincent promoted the celebration of the Octave of the Epiphany as an act of unity with his Orthodox brethren who celebrate Christmas on Jan 6th.

After seven years of loyal and selfless service, our man Randall is moving on to greener pastures. Or, he is moving on to New Orleans anyway. He is one of the kindest and most thoughtful guys I have ever known and it has been a pleasure to work with him. Last night was his final shift at the Red Star. The usual cast of characters showed up to wish him well. Shots were taken, stories were swapped, fun was had by all. But, it is a testament to his uncanny ability to befriend everyone that several of the cast members from Twilight showed up to wish him well. These folks are shooting the newest installment of the ever popular vampire saga in Baton Rouge and we are honored that they have taken to Red Star as one of their regular haunts (no pun intended). But, I think we were all touched that they took the time out of their busy lives to show up and and say goodbye to Randall. Rami Malek, Omar Metwally, Billy Tangradi and the rest of the folks that I didn’t get to talk to, let me say that you are class acts and are welcome back anytime. And to Randall, best of luck in all your future endeavors. I am sure that your native goodness and joyful approach to life will take you far.
