Aging

In our youth-oriented society, aging is seen by many as something to avoid at all costs. The Bible addresses the inevitability of aging and provides positive encouragement. What about the “American dream” of retirement? What should be the Christian’s response? Is it a biblical concept at all?

1. Aging, along with the brevity of life, can be frustrating.

Job 14:1–2, 5 How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble! We blossom like a flower and then wither. Like a passing shadow, we quickly disappear.… You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer. (NLT)

James 4:14 Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. (ESV)

Psalm 39:5–6; 90:3–12

2. The fact that the stages of life move by so quickly is a reminder to make the best of the years we are allowed, glorifying God each day.

Psalm 115:1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! (ESV)

2 Corinthians 5:9 More than anything else, however, we want to please him, whether in our home here or there. (GNT)

Psalm 34:12–15; 72:19; 79:9; 1 Corinthians 10:31

3. That God allows us to live to an advanced age is something for which we should be thankful.

Proverbs 16:31 Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness. (NIV)

Psalm 118:24; Proverbs 20:29

4. God understands every stage of life and is worthy of our trust.

Psalm 31:14–15 But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God. My times are in your hand.” (ESV)

Psalm 34:8–9; 91:11–12

5. God provides for every season of life.

Isaiah 46:4 Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. (NIV)

Isaiah 35:3–4 Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.” (ESV)

Psalm 71:9; Isaiah 40:29–31; 58:11

6. Our senior years should be a productive time. If retirement means slowing down and not working as much to make money, that is acceptable, but we should always be serving Christ and others all of our days.

Psalm 71:18 So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. (ESV)

Psalm 92:12–14 But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the LORD’s own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green. (NLT)

Job 12:12; Galatians 6:9; 1 Corinthians 15:58; 2 Thessalonians 3:13

Biblical Narratives

• Job, blessed in his latter days, Job 42:12–17

• Abraham and Sarah, used of God in their old age, Genesis 17:1–18:15

• Jacob, at the end of his life, Genesis 48–49

• Caleb, who refused to retire, Joshua 14:1–15

• Paul’s testimony, 2 Timothy 4:6–8

Practical Steps

• Be active with frequent physical exercise. This is essential for mental and emotional health.

• Seek wise advice for financial planning and big decisions.

• Minister to others at nursing homes or as a hospital volunteer. Reach out through calls and letters. Invest in the lives of others. See 2 Timothy 2:2.

• Keep your mind active and sharp through word and number games.

• Make a time line of important life events, thanking God for his care.

• Write Isaiah 46:4 on a three-by-five-inch card. Post it or carry it. Review often.

Scorpio is the sign of bold enterprise, a fearless nature guided by selfcontrol and confidence but geared for action when the time demands. The governing planet, Mars, provides the power with which this sign is packed, denoting the will to surmount all obstacles. Scorpio people are quiet, even secretive in manner, yet highly observant. Once roused to action, they are determined, aggressive and dominant, always ready to champion a cause. When they work for the good of others, they rise to great heights and are much respected, but Scorpio people, always well satisfied with themselves, can become domineering and arrogant. When seeking reform, they show little mercy toward those who oppose them and it is not uncommon for Scorpio folks to stretch a point and justify their actions regardless of honest opposition. Scorpio people are blunt,

argumentative and natural fighters but their coolness under fire deceives the opposition and adds to the Scorpio strength.

Hebrews 6:13–20 (ESV)

The Certainty of God’s Promise

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” 15 And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. 16 For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. 17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 12:1–3 (ESV)

Jesus, Founder and Perfecter of Our Faith

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Do Not Grow Weary

3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

11 And the LORD said to me, x“Faithless Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 Go, and proclaim these words toward ythe north, and say,

z“ ‘Return, faithless Israel,

declares the LORD.

I will not look on you in anger,

for aI am merciful,

declares the LORD;

bI will not be angry forever.

13 cOnly acknowledge your guilt,

that you rebelled against the LORD your God

and scattered your favors among foreigners under devery green tree,

and that you have not obeyed my voice,

declares the LORD.

14 eReturn, O faithless children,

declares the LORD;

ffor I am your master;

I will take you, one from a city and two from a family,

and I will bring you to Zion.

15 “ ‘And gI will give you shepherds after my own heart, hwho will feed you with knowledge and understanding

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton: Standard Bible Society, 2001), Je 3:11–15.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Hebrews 13:1–5 (ESV)

Sacrifices Pleasing to God

13 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. 3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. 4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. 5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Ecclesiastes 1:1–11 (ESV)

All Is Vanity

1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher,

vanity of vanities! All is vanity.

3 What does man gain by all the toil

at which he toils under the sun?

4 A generation goes, and a generation comes,

but the earth remains forever.

5 The sun rises, and the sun goes down,

and hastens to the place where it rises.

6 The wind blows to the south

and goes around to the north;

around and around goes the wind,

and on its circuits the wind returns.

7 All streams run to the sea,

but the sea is not full;

to the place where the streams flow,

there they flow again.

8 All things are full of weariness;

a man cannot utter it;

the eye is not satisfied with seeing,

nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 What has been is what will be,

and what has been done is what will be done,

and there is nothing new under the sun.

10 Is there a thing of which it is said,

“See, this is new”?

It has been already

in the ages before us.

11 There is no remembrance of former things,

nor will there be any remembrance

of later things yet to be

among those who come after.
