Karl started Karate just before his sixth birthday. In a little over five years he's progressed through 10th Kyu (Blue Belt), 9th Kyu (Orange Belt), 8th Kyu (Red Belt), 7th Kyu (Yellow Belt), 6th Kyu (Green Belt), 5th Kyu (Purple Belt), 4th Kyu (Purple & White Belt), 3rd Kyu (Brown Belt) and has has just successfully achieved 2nd Kyu (Brown & White Belt). These photographs are from the Shotokan grading on September 4, 2016.

Abstinence aka Self-Control (opposes gluttony) - Constant mindfulness of others and one's surroundings; practicing self-control, abstention, and moderation.
I really want to eat something, but I saw on Oprah that you should pick a time at night (approx. 2 hours before you go to sleep) when you stop eating... it's after 10pm, I'm sticking to water tonight!

Description of the photo: “RESPECT”
Photo taken in the dojo. Dojo means place (jō) where you follow the way (dō), the perfect unity of mind and body. It’s a place of concentration, learning, friendship and respect. Dojo is like a small society with very specific rules. First, there's the greeting. The greeting has a universal meaning in all cultures and societies. It’s a form of respect and first form of education. In karate, the greeting means you are ready to learn selfcontrol, courage, mutual aid, respect with humility and discipline. Target of this great educational project is the formation of a responsible citizen.
About the photographer:
I discovered a passion for photography during a project started by my association called "Digital Paths". It is a project where one walks through villages and snaps photos, then posts them on Facebook for publicity. I practise Karate so I could live out what it means. It clears the mind, fills the spirit and gives me a sense of peace. Unfortunately, I started late so I could not taste all its fruits but life is filled with so many others and I'd like to collect them all!

Take part in our new guest photographer contest, inspired by 2015 being the European Year for Development. Every month until September we will be announcing a different topic linked to development. Send us your photo inspired by the theme of that month, along with the submission form and you could be invited to Strasbourg to make a photo reportage.
How to take part
You can submit your photo and entry form via email.
An editorial committee will select the ten best entries and then pick the winner of the month. This will automatically make them a finalist for the jury prize. At the same time, the ten best photos will be showcased on our social media pages where everyone can vote for their favourite. The most liked photo will be awarded the public prize. Both of these photographers will be invited to the plenary session in November 2015.
