I turned 30 years old today. I guess it's time for a self portrait. I don't do too many of them.

so my little brother had his friends over today to practice for their talent show act. they will be dancing to Spice Girls' "Wannabe". And yes, they will be wearing wigs. and. skirts. and. skipping around and. ha. what is the world coming to?!
anywaysss i've been helping them with their act, so it's kinda fun.
babysitting tonight, i think we're watching Cat in the Hat. does anybody else besides me adore that movie...?
Back when I first started shooting seriously, on black and white film, I used a flashlight in a dark room to create high-contrast portraits. Tonight I decided to try it again. I was pleasantly surprised with the results!
If anyone wants to try and recreate this lighting, I used a high-powered LED flashlight with a piece of paper folded over the end, creating a sort of makeshift diffuser.
Lighting was bad, but I kinda like it anyhow.
Posting photos of myself is very out of character. let alone, photos where I'm straight out of the shower. Enjoy it while you can.
One of the things that kept me busy and off of Flickr was a photography course I took in the fall. It was a great course with a great teacher (Eric Boutlier Brown), and our final project was ten images with some kind of link. I went with a self-portrait based on ten objects that tell something about me.
Self- Portraits
Painting & Drawing for 5 year olds
Drawing inspiration from a collection of artists such as Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh, students explored creative ways to represent themselves in a self-portrait. We investigated different expressions and facial features, experimenting with a variety of mediums and techniques over the course of the project’s development. We concentrated hard on understanding human form and giving our figures full shape. Because many of us are still accustomed to portraying figures in linear, stick-like forms, each student received a mirror so they could take a close look at their reflection and help gain a better understanding of their individual characteristics. After gazing at themselves in the mirror, students participated in a class discussion where we determined the components that make up a face/body and the details that are unique to each. We learned that eyes are not just dots and we all have eyebrows, so it is best to include them! As students began to use a pencil to draw their portraits, we encouraged each student to include something special in their composition that showcased an aspect of their personality ~ a favorite personal accessory, a pet, equipment from activity or sport they enjoyed, etc. We also spoke in length about setting and how to choose a background that added to the concept of the portrait in hopes of presenting a more dynamic result. After the initial pencil drawings were developed, we defined lines with marker, used watercolors to add color, and finally added 3-dimensional details to make the portraits really pop off the page! Through this step-by-step process, we were able to create thoughtful and colorful self-portraits, which are exhibited here for you to enjoy!

A bit of fiddle-fun for a wet day.
My reflection in the door to the back porch from the studio, with a couple of PS filters.
Self portrait made with a pinhole in a tin plate mounted behind a Nikon body cap on a D70s. The pinhole is no smaller than 0.5mm, and the inside face of the body cap is about 2mm forward of the F-mount face which is just about exactly 45mm in front of the nominal film plane. The focal length was about 47mm. The exposure has been lightly corrected in PS.
