Segment was required to position for the westbound alignment on Morrison that we missed going east in the morning.

Nice full moon early in the morning. I finished segment 8 and decided to head to Twin Lakes and explore there. Twin Lakes is a very small town and an Historic District as listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is also a stop for hikers on the Colorado Trail (CT) and the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT).

Across the Lake is the Interlaken Resort which is also listed on the NRHP. A short, easy hike (approx 2.5 miles) from the trailhead parking will bring you to Dexter Cabin and then the resort. This is also where you can hike the 160 mile Collegiate Loop. There is an intersection where the CDT takes the Collegiate West and the CT takes the Collegiate East. If you are a CT thru hiker you can choose either direction. I would suggest the Collegiate West. Although more difficult it is also more scenic. This is what I was planning to do this year but did not (I did start from here in 2017).

Day 2

Segment 9 random pond to Segment 10 random spot

So now into Segment 10. I crossed another bridge at Busk Creek and then over Hagerman Pass Rd. Crossed another dirt road just before entering another Wilderness Area. This one was Mount Massive Wilderness Area, which includes Mount Massive. The second highest point in Colorado at 14,421'. The hiking was pretty good, mostly in the trees with the occasional view. Rather typical actually. Lots of rocks, steep side hill, some switchbacks, etc. Saw some aspens but not many. Large boulders were strewn about on the way to Rock Creek where there is a large camping area.

Encountered a number of hikers today. A dayhiker with a dog and some other Colorado Trail hikers. One of the CTers, also with 2 dogs, was doing like I was and filling in some gaps. A few hiking the Continental Divide Trail cruised past while I was making an early dinner at North Willow Creek.

I was planning to camp closer to the Mount Massive Trail, but since I had decided not to hike it at this time, I found a suitable spot about .5 mile past the intersection. I ran out of water just as I got to camp. Fortunately, while searching for a suitable branch to hang my food, I found a small spring. There was also the ruins of an old cabin. 13.2 miles for the day.

Day 5 (Segment 28)

Bridge site to Junction Creek Trailhead

Cruisin’ right along, I made it to Gudy’s Rest. A fantastic overlook with a bench honoring Gudy Gaskill, who made the Colorado Trail a reality. I stopped for a break and took in some of the final views. A very nice stop but Gudy’s bench was in the sun so I opted to relax on a rock bench hiding in the shade. Still very nice.

As hikers near the end of their journey, getting off of the trail is always on their mind and then how to get to an airport or bus station to travel home. Sometimes family and/or friends might meet them on the trail and provide transportation. Another option is to catch a hitch, which was my plan to get back to my car. Of course, I was hiking into a day hiking area, so any hiker encounters would be a possibility, since they would likely be parked at the trailhead.

Gudy’s Rest is about 4 miles from the trailhead, so I didn’t have too much further to go. And wouldn’t you know it, a couple of dayhikers arrived. Of course, now was time for my Yogi skills while chatting. (Yogi’ing is in honor of Yogi Bear who was always after a pic-a-nic basket. So, to yogi is to receive some food or other assistance from others who are interested in your trail tales.) They were very friendly and I was able to secure a ride from the trailhead! I just had to get there in time.

Now the goal was to make it to the trailhead by 2:00, when the friendly dayhikers agreed to pick me up. They were camped in a nearby Campground and not actually parked at the trailhead. It was after noon, so that would mean 4 miles in 2 hours. 2 miles an hour is definitely doable especially with the gentle terrain. Getting a ride and getting into town is motivation to move quickly. I did and made it to the trailhead about 1:35. I waited until they arrived and then enjoyed the short ride to the train station to my car. Thanks for the ride!

So that was it. Congrats to me for finishing the Colorado Trail! I started in 2015 and finished in 2021.

Hope I can get the drill out!

Segment 7 begins at the Goldhill Trailhead near Breckenridge, CO. Access to Breckenridge is easy via a free bus ride. The Summit Stage bus stop is not far from the trailhead.

I was hiking toward Leadville where I had left my car at the Leadville Hostel. Ownership of the Leadville Hostel has changed since I stayed there. It was $25 for a night in the bunkroom where I somehow managed to get a few hours of sleep despite some snorers. It was a very nice hostel; I would be surprised if it wasn't still.

I took the Lake County Link (pay $5 on bus) from Leadville to Frisco Station where I picked up the Summit Stage. I was hiking by 0900 on a bright, sun shiny day. The first several miles were fairly easy although mostly exposed. Evidence of the pine beatle devastation was clearly visible once again.

It was an awesome hike. The views are spectacular. Maybe the best I've seen (to this point) even better than GA Pass. Once above treeline, it is sidehill with some extremely steep areas. There were some patches of melting snow along the way.

There were quite a few CT hikers out on this day. After hiking about 12 miles which included up and over the high point of 12,495 feet, I stopped for the night. I was just short of the end of the segment.
