It never fails to amaze me how a seemingly minor event can change the outcome of one's best laid plans and expectations so dramatically. The second night after arriving in Cornwall I took Jay and myself over to the cliffs and lighthouse at Godrevy in the hope of capturing my first sunset. It was only when I came to use my filters that I found out that although I had my filters with me I'd left my filter holder and adaptor rings at home...dohhhhhhhhhhhh! After 5 mins of dark mutterings and fighting the desire to throw myself into the crashing waves, which seemed to be giggling in a mocking way as they hissed across the rocks, I adapted and tried to make best use of the light without filters. That's not to say I gave up easily, I did try holding the filters in front of the lens, which is ok when you're doing short exposures but a real arm burner when doing LE's. Unfortunately, tho, and of great relief to my arm muscles, it's impossible to hold the filter steady enough and, most importantly, perpendicular to the film/sensor plane resulting in soft focus/blur because of the light being refracted at an angle through the wobbly filter...a couple of shots were acceptable as far as sharpness was concerned but not as far as the comp was. Bugger! As it turned out my act of forgetfulness meant that photography took a back seat during the holiday allowing Jay and myself to just enjoy ourselves and the beautiful landscape we were in. I still carried my camera gear with me wherever I went but I concentrated more on people and the mini-me landscapes. At times tho, I was beside myself with frustration and recrimination when I saw stunning vistas and scenes that I couldn't shoot without the use of grads and ND's...grrr, arrgghh!

As I said, tho, with photography taking a back seat, and with the weather this time around being brilliant unlike in June, Jay and I were able to do more things than we otherwise would have done, 2 days of bodyboarding being one of them (sheer child-like fun and joy!), going for long, ambling coastal walks being another (sheer ooohhhing and ahhhing!), and coming home with a list as long as my arm of future locations. So, sometimes a holiday should just be a holiday and not a photographic expedition as I so often make them into, it was wonderful for once to become involved within the landscape, to relax into the surroundings, to be the passionate subject rather than the cool observer, to no longer be aloof like some Canon Terminator with its all-seeing red eyes weighing up everything it sees for it's potential threat value...erm, potential use in compositions!

Jay said to me recently that one of the things about photography she's discovered and enjoys with a passion is just how much more aware she is of what's going on around her, how much more there is to see in the world that she didn't notice before without a camera and a photographer's eye....welcome to the wonderful world of photography, Jay, just don't forget your filter kit like I did, eh!

As usual after a holiday, I'll be doing my utmost to catch up with all your amazing images asap, I hope you're well, happy and making real your vision of life.

I would just like to add a huge thank you to the many photographers I met in Cornwall, some flickrites, others not, who had tales to tell, sound advice to give, laughs to share and were just all round damn fine people! May your lenses be clean and your shutters never stick! See you all next year when I come down to Cornwall solo. :-)

Seemingly spontaneous aerobics astounded lunch-goers across the state today when flash mobs broke out at 12:10 p.m. on the streets of Denver, Greeley and Grand Junction. More than 100 flash mobbers exercised their enthusiasm for healthy eating and active living in each city when they suddenly disrobed to display retro, 1980’s-inspired workout gear and performed a coordinated aerobics routine.

In this seemingly idyllic scene, Samuel van Hoogstraten renders a moment leading up to one of the most surprising stories in Ovid’s Metamorphoses (4.308–88), in which a young man is sexually assaulted by a female nymph. Salmacis, one of Diana’s vain water nymphs, fell in love with Hermaphroditus, the youthful and beautiful son of the gods Hermes and Aphrodite, when she noticed him traveling through her territory in Asia Minor. After a futile attempt to seduce her introverted heartthrob, she pretended to leave, only to spy on him from behind a tree. Hermaphroditus, unaware of Salmacis’s presence and still dumbfounded by the nymph’s unabashed flirtation, took off his clothes and bathed in a stream. Unable to control her lust at seeing Hermaphroditus’s perfect, naked body, Salmacis jumped into the water and forced herself onto the struggling youth. Before Hermaphroditus could break free, Salmacis asked the gods to unite them forever. Her plea was heard, and the two bodies were molded into a single androgynous being.

Hermaphroditus, seated on the mossy shore of a gently rippling stream, dips the toes of his outstretched right leg into the water. His proper left hand leans on the ground, while his right hand holds up his white undergarment, revealing his smooth, beautifully formed limbs. His downcast eyes and slight smile emphasize his youthful vulnerability. Suspended from the tree branch above his head are his discarded clothes: a red velvet hat adorned with red and white feathers and a bright yellow, heavy satin robe. Salmacis stands behind the tree branch, her body almost entirely concealed behind Hermaphroditus’s yellow mantle. Crowned by a garland of flowers, she peers over the branch, with eyes fixated on the youth.

A tiny bird seemingly overflowing with energy, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet forages almost frantically through lower branches of willows and cottonwoods on Seedskadee NWR. Its habit of constantly flicking its wings is a key identification clue. Smaller than a warbler or chickadee, this plain green-gray bird has a white eyering and a white bar on the wing. The male’s brilliant ruby crown patch usually stays hidden—your best chance to see it is to find an excited male singing in spring or summer. They are common on Seedskadee NWR during spring and fall migrations, but it takes patience to get a good look, or photo, for identification. Ruby-Crowned Kinglets prey on spiders, pseudoscorpions, and many types of insects, including aphids, wasps, ants, and bark beetles. Kinglets usually forage in high tree foliage, hovering and pecking in order to glean insects from the surface of leaves and branches.

After a seemingly endless flight, Doobie and I have arrived at Pleso, the airport outside of Zagreb, Croatia, for a short layover before continuing on to Macedonia. I was convinced that at some point before now I would have had access to some kind of coffee beverage but either I wan't paying attention or there really wasn't anything catching my eye.

Perhaps it was a timing thing. All I can imagine is that though it's nighttime here, it's probably right about breakfast time back in California and my body is getting to that "needs caffeine" setting on the dial. That and I need to have something for today's date.

Pleso's finest it is! And since we haven't changed any money yet and don't understand the conversion rates, these people could be robbing us blind and we wouldn't know it!

And speaking of blind, with the stiffling percentage of robusta in this blend I feel like I'm drinking the espresso version of some hillbilly hooch, white lightning if you will, and can't say that I like it. Purposeful, but not enjoyable.

We're probably getting picked up at the airport by one of Nikola's friends. I say probably because at our last communication, things hadn't been completely arranged.

Ah well. Looking forward to finding better coffee (or at least a grinder) when we get to Skopje.

Here we see two seemingly disconnected artifacts: Omri's deserted ex-capital of Tirzah and the Samaria Ostraca #50 mentioning the Clan of Noah.

1Kings 16 tells us that Zimri reigned in opposition to Omri for seven days. When Omri attacked Zimri in Tirzah, Zimri realised that all was lost. He retreated to the citadel and set it on fire around him. Omri began to rebuild Tirzah as his capital but, on purchasing the hill of Samaria, he seems to have abandoned this re-build part way through.

Tirzah also helps us to date the Bible book "Song of Songs". In Song of Songs 6:4 the beloved's beauty is compared to the beauty of Trizah and Jerusalem. The only time that this could have applied is in the period before Zimri destroyed Tirzah. This suggests that the authorship of Solomon for this book is correct.

At Tirzah there is deep layer of burning, witness to Zimri suicidal act. On top of this burnt layer we find buildings on a much larger scale. But these buildings were never finished. Amongst these part-completed structures were found well-dressed stones which were never placed in position. Also the floor layer was never laid. This all accords well with the Bibles description of events at this time.

Tirzah seems to have been named after one of the clans of the tribe of Manasseh. That clan was named after one of the five daughters of Zelophehad. In Joshua 17 Zelohphehad claims his share of the Promised Land and asks that this share continue through his five Daughters (he had no sons), this was granted. Ten clans of the Tribe of Manasseh settled in Canaan, receiving tracts of land: Abiezer, Asriel,Helek, Shechem & Shemidah, sons of Gilead; and the other five were of the daughters of Zelophehad, Hoglah, Mahlah, Milcah, Noah & Tirzah.

During the excavations of Samaria a large group of ostraca were discovered. Ostraca are broken pots that have been used to write on. Most of these were receipts for goods. Normally these are relatively boring but in this case on a number of these ostraca were found reference to all the clans named after Gilead's sons and two of the clans named after Zelophehad's daughters, Hoglah & Noah. Once again the Bible account is shown to be accurate.

ALL SAINTS, HOLCOMBE ROGUS

Is seemingly all Perp. yet inside the two arcades are dissimilar, the north typically Devon, with bands of foliage capitals, that on the south plainer and typical of Somerset. There was a Victorian restoration and the east end reflects that with a rather Burges-esque reredos. Spacious though the church is, you come to Holcombe for the fittings and monuments. A former Perp screen is now wrapped around the north chapel, but was brought here from Tiverton. It is unusual in having wooden ribbons in the tracery, as if draped over. To the west is a complete Family Pew, Jacobean, with fifteen reliefs with scenes from the Old Testament. In the north chapel, the best two monuments. To the east Sir Richard Bluett d1614 lies propped up by an elbow on a shelf, looking down in a very caring way at his recumbent wife. Above inscriptions, a coffered arch, allegorical figures and achievement. To the west Sir John Bluett d1634 and wife, both recumbent, she above and behind him, under a heavy pedimented canopy supported on black columns. In frnt kneel eight children in a row, four carrying skulls, and maybe all girls? The wife's feet rest on a soppy looking dog, but his rest on a nut-eating squirrel. As Cameron continued snapping away, Mum and I passed comment on a poor lady commemorated in the chancel who had thirteen sons and nine daughters. [open]

Flying Cars? The Future of Transportation

Driverless Cars: Coming Soon to a Road near You?

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm MDT on Monday, July 1, 2013

(Tickets Required) The growth of automobile transportation has seemingly occurred without much disruptive change to the system popularized by Henry Ford. While this mobility system provides considerable personal freedom and enables substantial economic activity, it has serious side effects in terms of safety, energy, the environment, land use, traffic congestion, time use, and equality of access. It is now possible to supply better mobility experiences at radically lower cost to consumers and society. This opportunity results from combining connected, coordinated, shared, driverless, and tailored vehicles to create a spontaneous, responsive, and sustainable mobility system. What must be done to realize what is within our grasp?

Moving to a new location can be a stressful time filled with a million questions and seemingly no one has any answers. Because of this, we at Movers Springfield have created a post move-in checklist to help you stay relaxed and on top of your transition to your new home. We will try our best to answer any questions you may have with our detailed step by step guide.

Post Move-In Follow Up

Get Rid of or Use All Those Leftover Boxes

Boxes are great for kids’ Halloween costumes or can be repurposed for bringing in groceries, but if you don’t want to reuse them or don’t have room to keep them for your next move, then recycle them. There are a few databases you can use to find local places that will recycle anything of yours that can be reused including those pesky boxes. If you’re moving into the Springfield, Illinois area, here are a few recycling companies you might want to check out: Lake Area Recycling Services, Evans Recycling Inc, Advantage Recycling.

Meet the Neighbors

There’s nothing like starting off on the right foot with the new people you will be living around. Muster up the courage and head to their door to say hello. Who knows, you might make some fantastic new friends.

Efficiently Unpack

If you listened to our tips in our “Move-In T Minus One Week” article and cleaned your new home before you moved in, then this part will be a bit easier. If not, then you may want to clean kitchen countertops, cabinets, and various room floors before you unpack your boxes. This will ensure that your items don’t get dirty as quickly and this will help ensure that your house does not have any unwanted mold and mildew. Put boxes on countertops to make the unpacking easier. Trust us, your lower back will thank you later.

It’s a good idea to unpack to shower and sleep first as people rarely finish unpacking in a single day. Unpacking these essentials first will ensure that you don’t forget to unpack them and that you’ll have the energy to unpack them. No one wants to unpack necessities after they’ve spent an entire day unpacking.

Unpack the easy boxes first to make room. These easy boxes may be of books that are easy to stack onto bookshelves or it may be clothes to quickly put into dressers. It has been suggested to unpack about half your pictures and get them onto walls to begin creating that homely feel in your new abode. Making a daily quota to unpack is a great way to accomplish your unpacking without getting too disheartened or distracted.

Relax

It’s finally time to celebrate your successful move-in. Celebrating what you’ve accomplished is important for morale and to unwind from the stressful six weeks of planning for this very day.

We at Movers Springfield know how stressful moving can and we hope that this article and the previous five were helpful in your move to a new location. If you have any questions or need someone to help you move into the Springfield, Illinois area feel free to give us a call.

Another seemingly inappropriate topic for a musical that produced a great show. I saw Off the Page Productions' "Typhoid Mary" and it was one of the highlights of my Fringe this year.

A seemingly simple design but not so. I was inspired by recent designs from square folders. To my surprise when I wiki the animal, it was quite different. One of the key point is that the neck and head of this dinosaur is so heavy that it can't lift it's head the way it's popularily portrayed.

Learn how seemingly insignificant oral habits of children greatly impact their faces and the alignment of their teeth. Our advocacies are the early detection and prompt intervention of these abnormal habits. We believe this is the key to avoiding the future need for braces, extraction to create space for crowded teeth or relapses with the use of traditional braces.

Among Chiang Mai's seemingly endless array of richly adorned temples, Wat Chedi Luang is one of the most unmissable, consisting of various intricate temple buildings arranged around the massive ruined chedi that gives the complex it's name, a huge brick-built stupa that has remained in it's dramatic earthquake-shattered state since medieval times.

The huge chedi was begun in 1391 and wasn't completed until 1475, at which point it's spire rose to nearly 300ft. The huge stupa only remained complete until 1545 when an earthquake brought most of the upper part crashing down, never to be rebuilt. There was some limited reconstruction in the early 1990s, restoring the form of the tower part of the structure to something like it's original state.

Some of the sculpted decoration has been restored too; originally there was a terrace of lifesize elephants halfway up the base (very little remains of the originals, though those at the south west corner have been reconstructed. The staircases on each side are guarded by the largest, most fearsome nagas we saw, more monstrous than the usual elegant serpents.

The main wihan (prayer hall) only dates from the 1920s but is a particularly beautiful building with facades covered in gilded foliate ornament, and striking Buddha sculptures within.

As the visitor stands by this monument, he sees an obstructed view of the University's Main Building. Massive, imposing, seemingly solid, this famous city landmark overwhelms the visitor. Unpainted and gray, bleached by the elements, the rugged stonewalls have acquired an aura of its own. It has the distinction of being the first earthquake-proof building in the country. Designed by Fr. Roque Ruaño, O.P., priest and engineer, the building is composed of forty independent structures separated from each other by a gap of one inch, which is filled with loose cement. One of these structures rises beyond the level of the fourth floor to form the tower in the center of the huge box-like stone mass. A cross atop the tower rivets the gaze of the beholder. It promises the student a Christian perspective, a Christian formation. It symbolizes the University's mission to impart knowledge in the sacred and civil sciences.

Slightly in front of, and below the tower is the "Tria Haec" clustered around a giant clock in the center facade of the fourth floor. The hooded and robed figure "Faith" brandishes a cross up high and occupies the top of the clock. Lower and to the left of the clock stands "Hope" and to the right, "Charity". All these statues communicate with their varied expressive poses magnified in stone. They teach in silence.

Facing the building, the onlooker sees on the left of the "Tria Haec", a few meters away, a trio of statues representing theologians and historians: St. Augustine, the Doctor of the Church, St. Raymond de Peñafort, O.P., doctor of Canon Law, and Vincent de Beauvais, O.P. French historian. Three figures facing P. Noval but visible from the front, are those of the three great tragedians: the Spanish Calderon de la Barca, the Greek Sophocles, and the English bard Shakepeare. As the beholder looks at the statues to the right of the "Tria Haec", he encounters the philosophers: Aristotle, St. Albert the Great and Plato. Three statues facing A.H.Lacson St. are those of the playwrights: the Spanish Lope de Vega, the Greek comic Aristophanes, and the French neo-classical comedian Moliere. Fascinated by these gigantic figures mounted on separate pedestals, with varied dress and gestures, the student eager to learn may ask, "These intellectual giants have been singled out. What have they contributed to understanding? How have they affected the human spirit?" and his quest for knowledge is on.

One crosses the street from the Benavides monument to get closer to the massive, wooden doors of the Main Building. On the surrounding walls near the door is recorded history, with its great moments, both exultant and tragic. One bronze plaque recounts the foundation of the University in 1611. Another, the momentous visit of Pope Paul VI in 1970 ( for how many universities ever get visited by a pope, much less by two popes as is the experience of UST?) and still another plaque recounts the conversion of the university into a concentration camp by the Japanese Imperial Forces in World War II. Here 10,000 Americans, British and other nationals were interned from January 1942 to February 1945. Here they were starved, dehumanized, left to die. The UST Main Building probably hides within its walls other secrets of history, many of them unrecorded.

Seemingly infinite depth of fractal patterns receding from view. The unique timing of rain, humidity, light, not to mention the wood deck preservative coating I applied a couple years ago slowly easing its water pooling properties, all combine to render a mathematical marvel on a random Saturday morning.

A series of seemingly straight paths defines the arc of our personal stories over time. Meanwhile, our resolve is tested by our ability to hold back the weight of circumstance that would otherwise spill out recklessly, blocking our way. And all the while, volatile winds of change threaten to lay icy resistance or dampening puddles of emotion along our chosen route. Still, another step we must take, for that is the process of living.

New Year's Day, 2011

A seemingly simple job made more complicated by the fact that the entrants needed to survey the invert of a 30m deep wastewater inlet chamber.

Our teams supervised the confined space safety elements of the entry and supplied equipment and a standby rescue team.

The entrant was lowered into the chamber using a mobile crane - CSTS were there should there be a problem with the crane.

Óbidos, a seemingly untouched medieval walled city in Portugal. This was my first stop on my way North on Saturday. I parked the car in a paying lot, then walked all the way to the other end of the city, climbed the wall and came back on the city walls. Great little town, just a bit touristic, but unforgetable...

Setting out on such a seemingly impossible labor, Hercules came to a town called Cleonae, where he stayed at the house of a poor workman-for-hire, Molorchus. When his host offered to sacrifice an animal to pray for a safe lion hunt, Hercules asked him to wait 30 days. If the hero returned with the lion's skin, they would sacrifice to Zeus, king of the gods. If Hercules died trying to kill the lion, Molorchus agreed to sacrifice instead to Hercules, as a hero.

When Hercules got to Nemea and began tracking the terrible lion, he soon discovered his arrows were useless against the beast. Hercules picked up his club and went after the lion. Following it to a cave which had two entrances, Hercules blocked one of the doorways, then approached the fierce lion through the other. Grasping the lion in his mighty arms, and ignoring its powerful claws, he held it tightly until he'd choked it to death.

Does this trick have a special name?

This seemingly simple, yet historic, structure was erected in 1872 to the north of the the downtown area in Pioche, Nevada (pronounced PEE-ohch). The structure was designed in Italianate style by architects T. Dimmock and Thomas Keefe. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

It was originally contracted for a cost of $26,000, however those plans failed and the cost amounted to $75,000 in 1872. Due to financial difficulties the county was forced to pay off the coasts of the building gradually over a period of 66 years, and it ultimately cost Lincoln County $800,000. That amounts to roughly $11 Million in the 21st Century. As a result this building, which is today a museum, has been dubbed the "Million Dollar Courthouse."

Seemingly under constant construction.

Another very nice picture courtesy of the FireChief2 Collection.

A house that lacks, seemingly, mistress and master,

With doors that none but the wind ever closes,

Its floor all littered with glass and with plaster;

It stands in a garden of old-fashioned roses.

I pass by that way in the gloaming with Mary;

'I wonder,' I say, 'who the owner of those is.'

'Oh, no one you know,' she answers me airy,

'But one we must ask if we want any roses.'

So we must join hands in the dew coming coldly

There in the hush of the wood that reposes,

And turn and go up to the open door boldly,

And knock to the echoes as beggars for roses.

'Pray, are you within there, Mistress Who-were-you?'

'Tis Mary that speaks and our errand discloses.

'Pray, are you within there? Bestir you, bestir you!

'Tis summer again; there's two come for roses.

'A word with you, that of the singer recalling--

Old Herrick: a saying that every maid knows is

A flower unplucked is but left to the falling,

And nothing is gained by not gathering roses.'

We do not loosen our hands' intertwining

(Not caring so very much what she supposes),

There when she comes on us mistily shining

And grants us by silence the boon of her roses.

Surrounded by a wall but still seemingly "in our front yard," this Okinawan tomb predated our house at #63 Onishi Terrace Heights in 1971. This was one the first photos I took after arriving because we had read that these family tombs were to be greatly respected and not in any way defaced. So it was a bit of a surprise to see local school boys climbing on top one evening. I don't remember it happening again. But I do remember the tomb being visited by family during a local celebration.. Sure wish I had taken a photo of the front.

Other than the tomb and the sugar cane field behind our house, it was a fairly normal neighborhood. I would love to know what is there now.

If you could walk a few feet to the right, along the wall in the foreground, and through a gate, you'd then see the front yard where THIS was taken later:

Seemingly the gates to hell, in the caverns below Forbidden Corner in the Yorkshire Dales - an amazingly fun day out :-)

Willets Point, aka The Iron Triangle, is a shadow-neighborhood, seemingly on the fringes of the city, and even civilization. Bound by railroads, freeways, and the Flushing River and Bay, it is a hard place to get to. There is a strange world here- entirely dedicated to auto work and scrap metal. There are no sidewalks here, the streets are barely paved, huge puddles abound, and no normal rule of traffic apply. No one has a home here, and there are no stores or any kind. Mechanical work is happening everywhere- in the garages and even in the streets themselves.

Cars come to Willets Point to be resurrected- like the pristine BMW's and Mercedes being driven back out to more genteel surroundings. Or- cars come to Willets Point to die, as seen by the overturned chassis strewn about, and the massive mound of scrap metal.

This is the ash heap of The Great Gatsby, traversed by Nick Carraway on his trips from West Egg to Manhattan....

What is most amazing about Willets Point is its location right next to Citi Field and a stone's throw away from the U.S. Tennis Open. Being such a wasteland in such close proximity to places with such national and international profile puts the neighborhood in constant peril- had NYC won the 2012 Olympic bid (thank goodness it didn't, for many reasons) this area would have been razed for an Olympic venue.

10 mile expedition to Old Vlissingen- from Forest Hills through Corona, Willets Point, colonial sights of Flushing, the World's Fair ruins, and back.

Maintaining the Shield (deflecting depression) is an image that portrays the onset of depression. In the peripheral view a seemingly innocuous cumuli of tiny black particles begin to gather. They swirl and dance in the air like a noxious cloud of negatively charged electrons. Eventually the choking fringes of an acidic wave drift gently inwards. Within this murky cloud the metaphoric atoms of fear eventually reveal themselves, as they roll and settle into the mind like a fine mist. Looming blacker, they morph into particles of panic threatening to engulf all feeling, killing emotion, replacing memory with a numb abyss. No two people are the same, yet for all who experience the onset of mental darkness, it takes great bravery and training to recognise the signs of onset, to banish the cloud before it can envelop, to take control. To attempt an explanation of the unpredictability of its onset, in varied semblance, can lead others to doubt its very existence, which is devastating for the mind that is fighting this internal battle. Time, patience and determination are key to building a defensive enclosure that can filter in happiness yet block the spectre of destructive negativity and self deprecation.
