Cyber security is becoming an increasingly essential part of national security. Despite the growing importance of protecting critical infrastructure from cyber attacks, there are not adequate mechanisms in place to address the scale and expanse of these threats. Five prisoners have escaped from the Lompoc Federal Prison in the last five months, in four separate incidents (as of 22 Dec 2009). I think they were all drug dealers, of various persuasions. One has been recaptured. I guess there is a reason they call it a low security facility. But the Gitmo "detainees" will be safe in their new home in Illinois, says the admin.

ITU-T Study Group 17 work to build confidence and security in the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) continues to intensify in a bid to facilitate more secure network infrastructure, services and applications. Over seventy standards (ITU-T Recommendations) focusing on security have been published.
ITU-T Study Group 17 (SG17) coordinates security-related work across all ITU-T Study Groups. Often working in cooperation with other standards development organizations (SDOs) and various ICT industry consortia, SG17 deals with a broad range of standardization issues.

Iraqi security forces carry out random checks of vehicles and bikes along a main road in the southern city of Basra, 550 kms from the capital Baghdad, a day before the pull out of US troops from Iraqi towns and cities on June 29, 2009. The American pullout, under a bilateral security accord signed last year, will be completed June 30, which has been declared a national holiday, but soldiers and police were out in force as festivities began.

I do some occassional freelance consulting work for a few select government agencies that have people stashed away here and there in cramped, dark basement offices who like to think out of the box.
And when I say "think out of the box", I'm not referring to the normal corporatespeak horseshit of thinking out of the box where Jonathan, who's always wearing the stupid art print ties that really do little to change anyone's perception of him as ass-kissing douchebag who just happens to wear a lot of art print ties, bangs his first on the table and says "let's take tax advantages of a write-down domestically, sell the banned product to developing nations under a multi-layered interlocking system of shell companies, have the cash take a ski trip to the Alps - I think you all know what I mean - and when they finish they're vacation, voila, they're assets on the balance sheet of our subprime mortgage arm." No. That's friggin' kids stuff.
On our skunkworks projects, we use REAL out of the box thinking to solve organizational problems by using a variation of Dali's Paranoid Critical Method where the problem solver intentionally wills himself into a temporary psychotic state in order to approach a mundane problem or set of facts in a radically different way.
This is an example of one of our recent breakthroughs combining perceptual mapping with the Paranoid Critical Method to solve the DOD's problems with declining enlistment and retention levels. It's code name is Operation Freedom Boner.

The tragic part is that you can take a serious real-world approach to lay out some of the lies and misinformation that the Bush Administration used to get us into Iraq or maybe even lay out the Republicans smear strategies again Obama in the upcoming campaign.

The lone security guard made his presence known at 7:30 a.m. when he announced to a visibly agitated crowd that the Stripes tickets would not go on sale until noon. Outnumbered 600 to 1, the man picked up a hockey stick (there were a bunch in front of Irving Plaza) and patrolled with it, until I took this picture of him. I was sitting down and he tapped me on the shoulder and demanded I delete the photo immediately. Evil security guard would not leave until I did so. Unfortunately, he failed to realize that not only did I take several photos of him, I also use Mac Image Recall to restore deleted and corrupt photo files. Ahahaha.
