First Ascent of the Matterhorn

Zermatt's place in history was tragically secured with the first ascent of the Matterhorn in the 19th century. As the surrounding peaks were climbed in the 1830's to 50's, there developed intense competition to conquer the Matterhorn, which for many years had been considered "unclimbable". The English climber Edward Whymper had made several abortive attempts from the Italian side, when in 1865, he learned that the Rev. Charles Hudson was to attempt the Matterhorn from Zermatt. 1st climb

Hurrying over the Theodulpass, he joined forces together with Lord Francis Douglas, George Hadow, and the guides Michel Croz (from Chamonix), and Peter Taugwalder and his son (from Zermatt).

On the 14th of July the ascent was triumphantly achieved. However during the descent, just below the summit on the north face, Hadow slipped. In three disastrous seconds, Hadow fell onto the unprepared Croz, subsequently pulling Hudson and Douglas away from the face. The elder Taugwalder belayed the rope round a rock; but it snapped and four of the seven climbers fell thousands of feet to their deaths down the north wall.

News of the triumph and tragedy flashed around the world, and Zermatt and the Matterhorn have held a special fascination for many people ever since.

Edward Whymper

English mountaineer and artist who was associated with the exploration of the Alps and was the first man to climb the Matterhorn (14,691 feet [4,478 metres]).

Privately educated, Whymper entered his father’s wood engraving business and ultimately succeeded as head of it. He was sent to Switzerland in 1860 to make sketches for a book on the Alps and became a mountaineer thereafter. In the western Alps he climbed Mont Pelvoux (1861) and Les Écrins (1864). On his eighth attempt to scale the Matterhorn, on July 14, 1865, Whymper made the ascent by the Swiss ridge. On the descent, one member of his party slipped and pulled down three more—all four fell to their deaths. The rope broke, saving Whymper and two guides. One of the best known of all mountaineering accidents, this event is recorded in Whymper’s Scrambles Amongst the Alps (1871; condensed as Ascent of the Matterhorn, 1879), which is illustrated with his own engravings.

In 1867 and 1872 Whymper visited Greenland with the intention of crossing its ice cap, but he became convinced that the undertaking would prove too costly for him. In Ecuador (1880) he twice ascended Chimborazo, and he spent a night on the summit of Cotopaxi (19,347 feet [5,897 metres]), the world’s highest continuously active volcano. He published Travels Amongst the Great Andes of Ecuador (1892), which contained much valuable information for geographers, geologists, and mountaineers. He also compiled two handbooks on the climbing of Chamonix (1896) and Zermatt (1897; both reprinted 1974). Whymper’s last journeys were in the Canadian Rockies (1901–05).

RIAT has a fondness for themes, this was "securing the skies" then and now. The Spitfire obviously from WWII and the Typhoon currently the UK QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) aircraft. Also showing how slowly the Typhoon can fly, massive angle of attack and computer fly by wire.

Just when we thought all activity had ceased along the Slang/Rehills section of the river bank -- up pops a small excavator and dumper truck.

WTF?

We know that this mound is built of fine/silted soil. So what's the story?

Well, seeing is believing.

Along the strip of the bank opposite La Vallee, where, only a few months earlier, they'd carefully sculpted the bank, seeded it, manicured it (well, kind of), and studiously avoided all impact of tracked vehicles near the slopes -- they proceed to churn up the top of the bank, spreading this soil.

At first I thought it was to provide a more secure track for further traffic.

But, NO.

They simply spread and levelled the soil.

Days later, the reason became apparent.

Names: Finn Crux, Vice Admiral Crait, Spy, Scout, Blaster, Hunter, Heavy and Mechanic (the whole clan)

Species: Human/Near Human

Faction: Mando'ade

After Finn and his team departed from The Eclipse, the transports landed in an abandoned landing pad. It was said that it had been an old Republic base, an Imperial Research base and more recently, an unknown operations hub. Finn supposed that was where the yellow stripes came from...

When they first landed, everything was quiet. Too quiet.

Finn Crux: "What is this place?" he spoke to the hologram of Vice Admiral Crait.

Vice Admiral Crait: "This is where it will begin. Scout the surface of this area, and if you deem it to be safe, we will send more transports down with supplies and find a space to dock the cruiser. If it isn't safe, feel free to exterminate any hazards along the way. We will then arrange support. If you require immediate assistance, just tap the comms link." The hologram blinked out.

After securing Little Italy, I stuck around to make sure the GCPD was able to re-established a presence in the territory. As I took to the skies, I heard a familiar sound, a sound that reminds me of home – Metropolis. The signal was specifically for me. Only one person in the world had the ability to send that signal. I followed the signal to a small popular restaurant in the Diamond District where all sorts of characters tend to stop and take a bite, or so I’m told. I entered through the door and was greeted by none other than my good old pal, Jimmy Olsen.

“Superman, over here!”

The staff did not budge at my name being called. I guess they really are used to all sorts of people coming and going. I walked towards Jimmy, who was sitting in a booth by the window. We chatted a bit. He talked about how Perry had been letting him have more responsibility, no longer just bound to be “Lois and Clark’s photographer”, by getting to write his own column. After the small talk was over, I decided to cut to the chase.

“Jimmy, what are you doing in Gotham City?” I asked

His usual cheerful expression turned a bit gloom.

“Superman, I didn’t want to tell you this, but things are pretty getting bad in Metropolis. Ever since you left, there are some individuals who have taken advantage of your absence and become bolder with their criminal activities”, he said with a bit of dread in his voice.

With a reassuring smile, I say to him, “Jimmy, do not worry. As soon as I finish helping Batman finish this war, I’ll be back in Metropolis. Those ‘individuals’ will certainly get what’s coming to them.”

Deboxing Belle. After I removed the rubber band securing the purse chain to her shoulder, I had to use tape to keep it from slipping off of her shoulder (same as with Ariel's purse). Her dress is tight around her hips and legs, so I had to undo it in the back (as well as the outer skirt) in order to pull out the display stand. It was also hard to put the stand back on her. The bracelets are solid rings, so cannot be removed unless you pop off her hands, which I did not try to do. For some of the last photos, I decided to reverse the purse to show the rose rather than the lion. Also I placed the outer skirt a little to the left of where it was in the box pose, to show off her legs.

I was lucky enough to get Belle at the Disney Store today. There was about 70 people entered in the raffle, the most of any release in the series, so I was surprised and happy that I got picked. She is the sixth and final Premiere Series doll to be released. She is #1132 of 4500. I now have all six of the dolls, all gotten first hand, and am glad that the releases are finally over.

I love Belle's face and hair, her Beast purse and her jewelry, but her dress isn't one of my favorites from this series. My doll has some stains on her face, that look like stray hair product. I will clean them off when I debox her. Some strands of her earrings were stuck in her hair, that I freed when I took all the covers off the doll box.

Not quite as good as the out of hope during the remodel photo from last summer at the Senatobia store, but I thought it was at least nearly as interesting as the multitude of other similar scenes found (four different example links there) at other Walmart locations!
