I'll admit, we had to defer to Wolfram Alpha to confirm the relationship between Addison (my daughter) and Dominick. He is my wife's cousin's son. Per Wolfram Alpha, that makes him Addison's second cousin...and really the first person near Addison's age that she's had the opportunity to play with.

After being released early from dress rehearsal, I explored the little garden on the roof of the Disney Concert Hall. One of the parapets overlooked Hope and 2nd with a nice view of some tall buildings. I had a tripod with me so that I could do a long exposure, and one flash to light the foreground. Conveniently, there were also five chairs. Three of them raised my tripod high enough to view the street, the fourth let me see through the camera, and the fifth was my step up to the top of the wall!
I had finally worked out the composition and settings I wanted when a security guard came by and told me no professional photography was allowed. Although I explained that I was just taking a picture of myself, he insisted that the tripod made me a professional. I posited that it would be tough to be in my own photo without one. After I bemoaned being unable to get a shot of myself in this great location, I apologized for giving him a hard time and acknowleged that the dumb rule wasn't his fault. He said I wasn't as bad as most people and asked me how much more time I needed. I said ten minutes, and he promised to return then. I was gone in nine. Thanks, nice security guy!
Lighting: An SB-900 with a CTO gel through a collapsed umbrella camera left. Manually triggered with a Pocket Wizard as close to the end of the 10 second exposure as I could guess.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence took on the Quake rugby team in a game of kickball in Cal Anderson Park, on Seattle's Capitol Hill. It was a fundraiser for the Capitol Hill Alano Club.

This Southern Pacific manifest is climbing around Tehachapi Loop, with the second set of helpers (two more six-axle EMDs, the first appearing to be SD45R 7469), emerging from Tunnel 9. This heavy freight has a total of 10 engines hauling it up the grade. Of course, the upper train in this picture is the same as the one below as it loops around the famed grade in southern California.

Second Glow -- Sometimes you can see a second glow in the clouds at sunset. (Maybe at sunrise too; I wouldn't know.) This timelapse was shot at a frame every 2 sec and played back at 30 fps, so there is a speed up of a factor of 60. At the start of this short video you can see a couple of Chinook helicopters crossing from left to right.
The second of two DRS class 68 hauled ECS is seen less than 15 minutes after the first one had passed.
68006 is seen hauling 5G02 as it climbs up to Niddrie West Junction at 0911 on the 23rd June 2015.

For the second year in a row, we were treated to a very rare flying display from a U-2 at RIAT 2025. The aircraft performed a flying display on the Saturday and Sunday of show, consisting of a 'high-speed' gear-up pass, a simulated engine out approach, as well as the unique takeoff and landing routines of the aircraft.

Sometimes you get second chances to redeem yourself and sometimes you blow it. The last time I was up here to shoot L593 a tiny cloud rolled in right at the last second. I thought my chances of doing this shot in the late afternoon again were done. But as luck would have it, the WSOR ran another late afternoon trip on the Cambria the Sunday before Labor Day. This was my second chance. Fast forward to chase day and we found clouds covering the Randolph bridge scene. But as we pulled up the sun broke free. It was a mad dash to the top as the train started their crossing sequence. I lined up what I thought I wanted and fired away...framing was an after thought but I got the shot.
