Jesus falls for the second time
The National Gallery (Main Building, Level 2, Room 9)
Jacopo Bassano, The Way to Calvary, c. 1544-5
This painting nearly constitutes its own Stations of the Cross, evoking several episodes in Jesus’ tormented path to Golgotha. Jesus passes his mother Mary, who wipes away a tear, Veronica presents her veil, and the women of Jerusalem gather in prayer. A man with a rope tugs Jesus towards the cross in the distance, while another holds his fist aloft, as if already preparing to nail his victim down. Amidst this swirl of activity, Jesus—clad in a strangely pristine pastel robe—serenely falls to the ground. Crammed with figures, the composition should feel hectic. And yet Bassano deploys every feature, from gestures and gazes to billowing fabric, to guide the eye in a smooth, circular sweep. What should be a moment of grimy degradation exudes a tranquil sense of perfection. Even before he dies and rises again, it seems as though Jesus’ has already transcended mortal matter.

Came across these Chinese Lantern pods in the Union Cemetery, that adjoins the Reader Rock Garden, on 29th September 2010. I thought the light and bokeh were quite pretty. Needed a bright, sunny image to upload this morning, as winter has returned once again, bringing SNOW. I never like hearing the sound of a shovel or snow-blower when I've just woken up and haven't yet looked out the window, lol.
""Popular for the papery bright-orange lantern pods that develop around the ripening fruit, these are often cut and used for Thanksgiving and Halloween arrangements. Plants are aggressive spreaders, and best kept out of the perennial border so they don't take over. Also can be grown in tubs. Small white flowers appear in midsummer, over a bushy mound of coarse green leaves. Pods are green at first, but should be harvested as soon as the orange colour develops, the leaves stripped then stems hung upside down to dry in a warm dark room." From www.perennials.com.

Hotfoot from Harrington I headed for Seascale to grab a shot of the Saturday 6C53 Crewe - Sellafield.
I knew that this was a pair of 37s so it was worth squeezing it in before starting my backshift.
With no time to get south of Barrow where the orientation of the coastal line is more photo-friendly I knew I'd have to live with a fair degree of backlighting.

The Sacramento skyline dots the horizon as Yolo Shortline GP9 131 (built as SP 5759) brings excursionists alongside the Sacramento River at appropriately named Riverview on the former Sacramento Northern Holland Branch. This train is running five minutes behind a steam photo freight, its exhaust lingering in the atmosphere above 131. Dave Stanley photo ©2025
