Smooth As a Seashell - Exploring Macro Photography.

 

Seemed easy enough. Photograph something smooth. Many, many attempts later, sunlight, shade, under a cardboard box, with flash, no flash, every ISO/exposure level possible, bracketing, MF, with lamp, no lamp............

As the Chatham beach was closed for swimming due to Shark presence in the water, I had fun strolling around taking pictures.

Ocean sediment consisting almost entirely of the shells of foraminifera, which are microscopic creatures that have strange and complex shells, some of which are remarkably like larger seashells we're all familiar with.The long thing in the center is a tiny sea urchin spine, (I think)

..at the base of a rosebush.

The camera fogged up going from an air conditioned home into the early morning heat along Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. I knew the camera was fogged but wanted to see what sort of effect the fogged lens would have on the image. My daughter holds up a seashell.

Rock from the California Seashell Co. in Seal Beach, CA.

This famous character I made from white litorina sea shells, his nose - from a fragment of Tellina rostrata sea shell, mouth - from red tiny shells, three bottoms – from strawberry tops shells, also pearl Malabar sea shells and False Caribbean Cerith natural color shells.

I think it was harder taking this picture then making this wreath. Most of the shells are from Florida beaches. The wreath itself is 18" in diameter and has about 8 pounds of shells. I will take another picture in the daylight for posterity! LOL!
