Atlantic Grey Seal - Halichoerus grypus. I photographed these whilst on a boat trip off of the coast of Tresco in the Scilly Isles.

‘BEACH URCHIN - AAAHHHHH.’

I kept getting glimpses of white fur and slight movements at the edge of a low dune, so kept my eye on the spot. After a long wait this tiny seal pup managed to raise it‘s head over the parapet for just a split second. It must have taken an enormous effort on it‘s part and I got the impression it was very small and weak. It couldn’t maintain position or progress any further, so soon slipped back down out of sight.

I was pleased to grab this single shot, even though it lacks the detail I would have liked. The pup was a bit too far away for the lens I was using.

Inquisitive Seal at Kirikiri Bay

Horsey Beach, 12 October 2014

Near this spot there's a monument called padrão, which is a stone cross, with Portuguese insignia and an inscription which, when translated to English, reads:

"In the year 6685 after the creation of the world and 1485 after the birth of Christ, the brilliant, far-sighted King John II of Portugal ordered Diogo Cão, knight of his court, to discover this land and to erect this padrão here".

Diogo Cão, who was a renowned navigator, reached Cape Cross in January 1486, being the first European to visit this area.

The name of Cape Cross is derived from this padrão.

It's amazing to see how some of the harbour seals rest on small rocks, guess you need a lot of blubber to feel that would be, comfortable. Inside Passage, BC

Don't worry they're not dead, just sleeping. Cute right?

Mid-February is peak mating season for Northern Elephant Seals. That was very evident to us as we observed them from a very popular observation deck near San Simeon, CA. There were about 800 seals on the beach, and the mating activity was nearly constant.

Note the sand cascading off the male's back. When relaxing on the beach, Elephant Seals usually fling sand up on their backs, probably as an attempt to cool themselves by blocking the sun's rays.

An adult male elephant seal does not react kindly to another male in the area around his harem, and has the scars to prove he's earned his little spot on the beach.

Seal at Eyemouth Scottish Borders

Oak Bay Marina, Victoria, BC

This young seal swam close to the dock looking for fish. People can buy bags of frozen fish from the gift shop nearby to feed to the seals. I used a polarizing filter on the lens to bring out the colour of the water.

Seals and babies are breeding at Donna Nook in Lincolnshire. This one was born a few hours before this picture was taken, with the afterbirth just out of shot.

Spent a few hours watching the grey seals and attempting to interpret what they were doing.

Hope you can also understand what we were thinking.
