The Weddell Seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) holds the mammal record for living further south than any other species. They occupy permanent "fast" ice, entering the water through cracks and breathing holes, whereas the other Antarctic seals prefer pack ice which has disintegrated into smaller pieces. It was named after a seal hunter called James Weddell (1787-1834), who also had the Weddell Sea named after him. They cannot have been difficult to hunt as they show total indifference to humans. I photographed this one snoozing on snow on the Antarctic continent itself. Unlike the similar Crabeater Seal, their pelage is richly patterned like an Axminster carpet. They can also be identified at a distance by their comparatively small heads on huge, fat bodies.

Seal Rock is a large and prominent rock found offshore at the North end of the Ocean Beach in San Francisco, California, United States. It is named for the population of Steller's sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) who used to haul out on the rock. Both species are often colloquially called "seals."

A local celebrity around these parts.

People travel for miles for a glimpse of the seal in a tree.

She has been named "Tree Seal"

Sailing in the icy waters north of Nuuk, Greenland this large seal was suddenly just there in front of us. Even as we sailed close to it, it did not move. At last it slipped through a hole in the ice and away it was.

I had to crop this because of a slanting horizon..

This lovely sculpture of a seal family was created by Stephen Walker who is responsible for a number of large commemorative works throughout Tasmania. Sadly Walker died in 2014 aged 86. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Walker_(sculptor)

He also completed the sculpture of the "Playful Thylacines" in Launceston.

Seal Point at Samuel J Boardman State Park on the southern Oregon coast is but a part of several geological wonders on the Oregon coast. The length of the park is 20 miles along the coast and that means 20 miles of spectacular beauty, coastal headlands, hiking trails and more. Seaside prairies, spectacular vistas, secluded cove beaches, rugged cliffs and forested sea stacks come one after the other at this park.

During the southern summer fur seals haul out on Half Moon Island, Antarctica, to breed. Winter is spent foraging at sea.

The start of another project...

I'm planning on spending as much time as I can with a colony of Grey Seals through the Winter. The project started last weekend with my first visit to find this cute young pup.

I kept a good distance away so as to allow him to carry on rolling around and scratching. Mum was just to the right of this image and she slept most of the time.

Seal Rock State Wayside is located south of Newport, Oregon, and features large off-shore rock formations that provide habitat for seals, sea lions, sea birds and other marine life. The beach includes interesting tidepools as well as excellent ocean views and a sandy beach. The short trail to the beach is steep in areas, but features an ADA accessible viewpoint at the midway point with views of the beach and tidepools. The picnic area near the parking lot is in a pleasant stand of shore pine, spruce and salal.

It was wonderful watching these two seals playing in the water at Horsey Gap!

On a long walk on the beach ( with storm force 9) It is the first time that I have seen a seal. So I want to share one of my picture

For something a bit different a sealion I met in our harbour a few days ago. He or she was about 1 meter away and not shy. Fortunately I was on a wharf and a bit out of reach of those teeth.

Thanks very much for visiting down in Dunedin, NZ

Not sure what happened to this poor seal. It was having a great morning though, tossing seaweed around and doing spins.
