Elephant Seals at Ano Nuevo State Park in Northern California during peak breeding season
See more of my animal photos at Give a Dog a Bone, a quality of life program for long-term shelter dogs in San Francisco, and at the DogTails Blog.
While I was photographing along the coast I saw this seal haul out of the water. When he first emerged his nostrils flared wide like he was gulping in air. Is he a harbor seal? ID help appreciated.
The grey seal (Halichoerus grypus, meaning "hooked-nosed sea pig")
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the grey seal breeds in several colonies on and around the coasts. Notably large colonies are at Donna Nook (Lincolnshire)
The name is supposedly to be that of a ship called 'The Donna', part of the Spanish Armada, which sank off the Nook (a small headland) in 1588.
Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris). This old bull has been heavily scarred from many fights. Point Piedras Blancas, near Cambria, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif.
This little seal was on the beach half covered in sand.....all by his/her lonesome. Hopefully he/she wasn't sick....such a cute little creature
Henry, now 12.5 weeks old - getting so big! Out on Eel Brook Common today in Parsons Green, in between Olympics events! A bit blurred, but so cute (with his seal pup look).
Please have a look at my website:
Some shots I recently took of some seals on Bull Island in Dublin, Ireland. Two types of seals can be found on the Island and around Dublin bay, the grey seal and the common seal.
I think these are common seals although I may be wrong.
