For safety reasons, the scroll saw artist was not in period costume, but he drew many curious onlookers.
Today the Jodo Mission of Hawaii saw the return of its hand-painted Japanese hanging scroll. At least 60 years old and the second largest such artifact in Hawaii, it was fully restored by skilled Japanese artisans under the direction of Japan Memorial Corporation's Tatsuji Maeda, who presented the restoration work to the Jodo Mission board this morning. This prized artwork will be carefully stored and only displayed in the temple maybe twice a year. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about these scrolls, it was certainly an education for us (and a substantial investment).

The scroll was originally cut away to hold a crappy C extension machine. The machine was removed but the damage was extensive to the scroll and neck. My luthier Alex Friedman at the Acoustic Bass Shop in South San Francisco did an excellent job on patching the scroll - you can't tell that half the thing was missing unless you get right up close to it.

L´Augusteo sembra un gigante che si scrolla di dosso i quintali di terra, gli strati della storia, la decennale vegetazione invadente. Sono due le linee di scavo che la Sovrintendenza comunale sta portando avanti: una per dare una nuova forma, secondo il progetto di Francesco Cecchini, alla piazza degli anni Trenta; l´altra, per riportare alla luce - ossia dietro le vetrine dell´Antiquarium che si affaccerà lungo l´anello esterno - le migliaia di marmi che il mausoleo conserva nelle sue viscere. E che le benne delle ruspe hanno portato improvvisamente a galla. «Antonio Maria Colini, finiti gli scavi che gli avevano fatto scoprire la cella con le urne contenenti le ceneri dei familiari di Augusto, "tombò" letteralmente nelle pareti laterali centinaia di capitelli, colonne, frammenti di statue» spiega l´archeologa Paola Virgili, direttrice dei lavori e dello scavo condotto da Ersilia Loreti, Elisabetta Carnabuci e Nadia Agnoli. «È bastato che abbattessimo una cortina di mattoni, per rientrare in possesso di un patrimonio di marmi e pietre che appartengono al sepolcro imperale, ma anche ai 120 edifici demoliti durante il Ventennio per isolare l´Augusteo». Allieva di Colini, la Virgili si muove tra la polvere del cantiere come a casa propria: «Quel capitello, si trovava a via Ripetta ed era stato trasformato in una fontana mentre questa scala - spiega facendosi largo tra i rovi - apparteneva all´Auditorium d´inizi Novecento costruito sul mausoleo e abbattuto dopo il 1936: terremo anche questa, perché ogni traccia della storia dovrà essere evidenziata». Poi, davanti ai frammenti della volta, crollati a terra e oggi deposti come gigantesche corazze capovolte, l´archeologa sogna: «È possibile capire da dove si staccarono e, se la tecnologia ci aiuta, si potrà anche riportarne alcuni lassù in alto, per suggerire la copertura di questo edificio che misurava 100 piedi d´altezza, trenta metri in tutto, su un diametro di ben 88 metri e 80». Per andare avanti nel progetto di restauro completo del mausoleo della famiglia Giulio-Claudia, c´è un finanziamento (legge Roma Capitale) di 4 milioni di euro, ma «ce ne occorrerebbero almeno altri 6», spiega l´archeologa. Intanto ci sono però i 450 mila euro stanziati per fare strada alla nuova piazza. E due milioni per fare spazio all´Antiquarium togliendo terra per tre metri lungo i fianchi dell´anello, ma anche per le operazioni di scavo all´interno del monumento. Per fare posto alla pavimentazione pensata da Cellini verso via Tomacelli (in asse con il rettifilo che nell´antichità univa il mausoleo al Pantheon di Augusto) sono state scavate, e in parte demolite, le cantine del cinquecentesco Collegio dei croati abbattuto nel Ventennio, «sotto le quali non abbiamo trovato finora nulla di romano, per di più prima del 1463 questo posto veniva chiamato "gli ortacci"».

Per lungo tempo è stato solo un cantiere, dall'aria dimessa e dimenticata, in alcuni punti trasformato in discarica. Dopo 14 anni il Mausoleo di Augusto, la tomba monumentale del primo imperatore della Roma antica, torna ad accogliere i turisti, per il momento causa Covid solo autoctoni. Obbligatoria la prenotazione per la visita, per motivi di contingentamento, e fino a fine giugno è già tutto sold out. "Aspettavo questa apertura da 72 anni, da quando sono nata, e mi sono sempre chiesta se avrei fatto in tempo a vederlo sistemato prima di morire", afferma ridendo una signora romana, tra le primissime ad entrare. "Noi siamo vecchi compagni di scuola cui piace scoprire la capitale", afferma un gruppo di amici che fa un selfie di rito prima del tour. "Abbiamo prenotato proprio il primo giorno disponibile, perché questa è un'occasione unica", aggiungono. I servizi museali saranno gestiti da Zètema Progetto Cultura.

Dopo tre anni riapre il Mausoleo di Augusto, il più grande sepolcro circolare del mondo antico. Dal 2017 era interessato da lavori di restauro. I visitatori potranno accedervi gratis dal 1° marzo al prossimo 21 aprile, giorno in cui ricade il Natale di Roma.

ROMA - Vorrei ringraziare Beppe Grillo per aver consentito, da Garante del MoVimento 5 Stelle, alla Sindaca Virginia Raggi di dedicare qualche minuto nella sua giornata a celebrare il lavoro coordinato da Giovanni Caudo e dalla mia Giunta per il restauro del Mausoleo dell’ Imperatore Augusto, persino recandosi sul luogo.
Come ben narrò ARTRIBUNE il 2 maggio del 2017 (bit.ly/3bUTgOL) i fondi per l’immenso intervento scientifico, allestitivo, museale, architettonico, arrivarono in parte dallo Stato e in parte da una grossa donazione privata.
Un budget importante: 4,2 milioni di fondi pubblici e 6,5 milioni messi sul tavolo da Fondazione TIM, ente istituito nel 2008 come espressione della strategia di Corporate Social Responsibility del Gruppo Telecom Italia.

“La soluzione la trovò, come per altre operazioni di alto mecenatismo – una su tutte il restauro degli affreschi della Sala degli Orazi e Curazi, finanziato da un magnate russo – l’ex sindaco Ignazio Marino, che su questo fronte seppe spendersi con tenacia e convinzione. Era l’ottobre del 2015 quando il Primo Cittadino di #RomaCapitale annunciava: “Oggi parte la gara per una prima parte di lavori all’interno del Mausoleo, il più` importante del primo Imperatore di Roma, e contemporaneamente possiamo annunciare uno storico accordo con la Fondazione Telecom che segna non solo l’arrivo di risorse fondamentali, ma anche una collaborazione nella fase del completamento dei restauri e della fruizione del monumento.”
La sinergia tra pubblico e privato, ancora vincente, consentiva di dare corpo a un progetto ambizioso, visionario, complesso, a misura di una grande Capitale europea del XXI secolo.”
Ma qualcuno non sa resistere e quindi … evvai di fake news…..!!! Il giorno 1 Novembre 2017 dal Campidoglio si è annunciato il finanziamento con 10 milioni di euro della riqualificazione di Piazza Augusto Imperatore, come da progetto dell’architetto Francesco Cellini. Nel comunicato di allora si omise di dire che il progetto fu voluto e finanziato dalla mia Giunta con il bilancio del 2015.
Oggi, ancora una volta, durante l’inaugurazione si omette di dire che il finanziamento votato dalla #GiuntaMarino e il diligente lavoro del Prof. Giovanni Caudo hanno consentito di indire la gara d’appalto per l’avvio del cantiere di Piazza Augusto Imperatore (determina dirigenziale n. 445 del 26 Marzo 2015) pubblicata sulla Gazzetta il 10 Aprile 2015. La commissione giudicatrice ha iniziato a lavorare il 15 Luglio 2015 e il cantiere doveva aprire, come da documentazione della gara d’appalto, nel Gennaio del 2016.
Una vicenda, per altro, ben riassunta anche dallo stesso sito istituzionale di Roma Capitale (che l'attuale Giunta probabilmente non legge….) visibile a questo link: bit.ly/3bPWrYh
Ci impegnammo molto per questo risultato perché, insieme alla mia Giunta, pensavamo che progetti storico-archeologici come questo non solo fossero importanti per #Roma ma per tutto il pianeta. Roma ha la fortuna di avere dei luoghi e delle archeologie uniche al mondo ma anche il dovere di valorizzarle per il resto dell’umanità.
Oggi è un giorno molto bello per Roma che aspettavamo da tanto. Ma forse la vera notizia è che invece di impiegare 600 giorni come previsto ne sono stati utilizzati 1.800 e ancora manca il restauro della piazza che avevamo progettato, anch’esso, nell’ormai lontano 2014 come qui documentato (bit.ly/3uMyJEH).
