The Wales poet Dylan Thomas, born in 1913, did not make money from selling books, but from the sale of records, particularly in the USA.

Although Thomas came to be appreciated as a popular poet during his lifetime, he found earning a living as a writer difficult and began augmenting his income recording radio shows and working as a scriptwriter for the BBC. During the 1950’s, at the age of thirty-five, Thomas’ reading tours in the United States marked a turning point popularizing the poetry reading as a new medium for the art.

Via Bob Dylan’s interest in folk music, the serious ambitions of poetry found their way into pop music, which over the following decades was to see a great creative flowering.

Dylan Thomas’s portrait appeared on the cover of The Beatles’ legendary album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967, at the request of John Lennon. The iconic cover designed by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth features a tableau of historical figures and celebrities.

At the presentation of the prizes in the Chiswick Book Festival Young People’s Poetry Competition, Britains’s youngest published poet Miranda Sofia reads from her collection Poems and Stories for Little People, while author and scriptwriter Daisy Goodwin looks on.

Now in its 13th year, the Chiswick Book Festival Young People’s Poetry Competition encourages young people to enjoy creating their own poems. We look for original poems on any theme, up to 25 lines long. It is free and open to children (UK only) in Years 3 to 7, aged 7 or 8 to 12. The aim is to celebrate children’s creativity in poetic form. There are five year-group categories, with prizes awarded in each section.

The 15th Chiswick Book Festival took place during 6-13 September 2023 and brought to venues across Chiswick, west London top authors and their readers for a week of history, poetry, biography, fiction, thrillers, gardens, food, wine, politics, creative writing, self-help and children’s books – all in aid of reading-related charities.
