Created from enhanced scribble window-clings made from string-gel, with added detail from window crayons and googly eyes!
Once upon a time there was a monotypic Genus of moth, Ogmograptis, held responsible for these scribbles on the bark of some Eucalypt trees. Apparently doing no significant harm, the moth layed an egg which developed into a caterpillar that burrowed down, chewed away at the cambium and then just disappeared. These trees typically have decorticating bark which, when shed, revealed the enigmatic scribbles.
Now we know there are 14 species, that they undergo a number of moults in their tunnelling, that they turn about face eating their way back through the yummy callous material laid down by the tree in response to the invasion. Once the caterpillar is big enough it burrows out, drops to the ground and pupates to start the whole thing over again.
I haven't done due diligence on the ID of this tree, that's not my thing, but it is probably a Eucalyptus rossii, or Scribbly Gum, given the distribution of host trees for these moths. That ant is included for scale.

Such ‘scribbles’ on scribbly gums are an icon of the Australian bush, but until recently very little was known about the cause of these distinctive scribbles. It is now known that they are made by the larvae of certain types of moth as they feed under the top layer of various types of gums (eucalypts) before hatching into moths. This happened to be on our 9.5km each way walk from Mt Oberon to Sealers Cove, Wilsons Prom, but such scribbles can be seen everywhere in Australia.
Seen by the roadside near Rainbow Beach, in heathy woodland in Great Sandy National Park. It may be Eucalyptus signata; there are several 'scribbly gum' species. Larvae of the Scribbly Gum Moth (Ogmograptis scribula) are responsible for the scribbles.
A bagworm like the one I found the other day, but this time it looks like it's chewing along the scribbly gum's scribbles. Surely this isn't what makes them...
Update: I contacted the CSIRO after reading their fact sheets, and it turns out that this bagworm doesn't actually make the scribbles. From their return email:
(Max Day, CSIRO) Because I am the person who has been trying to understand the scribbly gum moth story, Julie Carter forwarded your email to me. As you said, you have a truly remarkable photo. So I feel sorry to have to say that the bag moth doesn't make the scribble. In fact, the scribble moth larva is very small and tunnels just beneath the epidermal cells of the tree trunk. The scribble only becomes obvious when the bark is shed during the hot months.
We have collected larvae from several species of eucalypts and bred the moths. They are small and inconspicuous. There are a number of specimens in the Australian National Insect Collection in Canberra. Only one of the species has been described, but one of my colleagues plans to describe others when she can find the time.
The bag moths belong to a different family and are much larger.
What is interesting in your photo is that the bag moth larva appears to be feeding on the scribble, something we have never seen before. So I was delighted to see your photo and will now review the Fact Sheet to try to make sure that it doesnt give the wrong impression of how the scribble is formed.
