This is my friend Christina and her dog Scribbles. Christina raised Scribbles since he was just a puppy, she was even there on the day he was born. They have a very special bond. In 2009, Scribbles went blind and in 2010, he was diagnosed with kidney disease. About this time, Christina graduated from MSU and was planning to move to Washington, D.C. She was faced with a tough decision. Take Scribbles with her, or leave him behind with friends in Michigan who have a farm? She chose the latter, believing his quality of life would be better in Michigan than in a big city like D.C.
When Christina told me she was coming back to visit Scribbles last fall, we planned a special day out and photo shoot. As Scribbles' heath continues to deteriorate, I thought it would be nice if she had a record of what might be one of their last visits together. I was touched by Scribbles' obvious love for Christina, and how excited they both were to be together. Scribbles knew exactly who she was, and even though they haven't been in contact for months, it was as if they never left each other's side.
Eucalyptus haemastoma - the 'scribbles' are tunnels made by the larvae of the Scribbly Gum Moth. Eggs are laid between layers of old and new bark. The larvae burrow into the new bark and, as the old bark falls away, the trails are revealed.
