St John the Baptist's in Berkswell is one of the most remarkable historic churches of the old county of Warwickshire, with some outstanding Norman work surviving in the chancel and crypt. The view from the long path alongside the churchyard is delightful and has been photographed and published many times. The ensemble of the fine red-sandstone church with its wonderful Norman east end and the grey sandstone tower to the west, balanced by the wonderful Tudor timber-framed porch is one of the most delightful introductions to any parish church.
The interior too is full of interest, all in pink sandstone and with much woodwork, much of which dates from late 19th and early 20th century restorations but with old sections mixed into the screens separating the nave from the side aisles. The Norman crypt is a delight (and wonderfully cool during hot summer days) and consists of two chambers, one rectangular main chapel corresponding to the chancel above and an intriguing octagonal space under the east end of the nave, now used as a baptistery. Other unusual features include the surviving gallery in the south aisle (effectively creating two entirely separate chapels) and the picturesque timber-framed south porch whose upper chamber can be entered from the gallery.
Happily the church is normally kept open and welcoming to visitors, and is one of the very best in the county, well worth a visit.
