Build progress on the Narcissus Shuttle - 1:18 scale - ALIEN 79. Finally an update huh?! It's all about the storage doors...had to do some major updates to the doors after finding some reference material that gave me a better look at the doors details. Rewoked the door handles and the door's interiors. Also it's my first time building door hinges! Hinges work great, although not permanently attached at this time while there's so much more building to be done . The two small tabs venturing off the side of the door has small magnets to hold the door close. More updates to come! ‪#‎alien‬ ‪#‎narcissus‬ ‪#‎shuttle‬ ‪#‎nostromo‬ ‪#‎diorama‬ ‪#‎scratchbuilding‬ ‪#‎ripley‬

The experiment to build a hand laid Lego switch has started! I'm not exactly sure how its going to turnout (bad pun!) … but we shall see. I've run out of 00-90 screws, so I'll have to wait until I get more before I can semi-permanently secure the rail. In the meantime, cutting/filing the rail sections will take more than enough time. I've made a couple of brick-built "track gauges" to hold sections of rail in place while marking/cutting/filing/drilling--its not super high precision, but well within the tolerances required for Lego wheel sets! I'm hoping screwed rail sections will give me enough flexibility to adjust and fine tune the assembly if required. I'm following the same assembly procedure as I did when hand laying EM gauge track work (back in the day). That is, to lay the stock rails and then gauge across the wing rails and closure rails. Then proceed with the crossing vee gauged across from the stock rails, followed by the check rails. Finally, the laborious task of planing switch rails and fitting the stretcher bar. I'm not sure how I'm going to secure and mechanize the switch rails, but I'm sure I'll figure out something!

The yellow is a bit on the green side, which isn't as visible under the fluoro lamp I used to take this.

A general view of the Arden Forest depot with a cross-section of vehicles at rest. On the left is Stratford Park & Ride liveried Optare Solo PR51 AFC alongside the Bedford TK recovery vehicle and a company car. Heading the line of coaches is the third ex-West Cornwall Paramount, C113 BEX being a Bedford YNT unusually fitted with a Volvo engine and used as the fleet spare. Next to it are Bova NIL 4222 and the two Volvo grant coaches, and behind is the other Park & Ride bus, Alexander ALX200-bodied Dart R34 ADL. All of these are my own additions to the fleet and came in various green-based liveries which I have retained.

Here is a scratchbuild by me of a 9.4m wright cadet for the crossways fleet. It is awaiting fleet logos and will be used on a new haresfield, stroud and gloucester service. It looks much better in the flesh I must say! The story is that it was bought new and then stored until 2009, so instead of a 55 plate we really have a 59 plate here for the price of a 55 plate making it a bargain! Better than my first half hearted attempt but still not all the way there...

Another view of the recently purchased & re-built Duple Caribeen scratchbuild. Was part of the Europa fleet in the 1980's, this one was built as a full exec with seating around tables and carries reg number A625NEL

Based on this scratchbuild.

If it's not obvious this is in the techniques group for the roof.

Build update on the MU/TH/UR 6000 chamber - ALIEN 79 - Nostromo 1:18 scale. Possibly my last bit of updates to the MU/TH/UR build. Waiting on some resin to cast the control panels to the entryway door then this project will be tabled and figure sculpting will commence! Will finish the control chair as well. I'll be needing to create a shell that will encompass the chamber along with the corridor leading to the entrance from the bridge. It will need to allow room for the fiber optics to set in. If it's ever to be put on display, it will be tricky. I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it. More to come! #alien #nostromo #muthur6000 #weylandyutani #buildingbetterworlds #diorama #scratchbuilding

An early experimental scratchbuild is seen here based on the SYT Dodge reeve burgess bodied Little Nipper

After a short break from models ( and trying to get my head around this new flickr tut tut ) work is now progresing on my latest project the Northern counties Domminator, and here we see the skeletel start.

Ive glued the two front sections to the sides and the upper saloon celling is in, now im sanding the front corners and window section.Lots of tweeking and inperfections to sort yet

Terry's technique for scratchbuilding involves building up layers of thin cardboard and the results as can be seen here are excellent. M505 XFY is a Mercedes 814L truck chassis with a Buffalo body by North West Coach Sales and the model represents it in Moseley dealer stock circa 2003 when Terry looked at it with a view to buying it for his Vista Coachways fleet, but he didn't and it was later sold to Edwards of Llantwit Fardre.

In addition to scratchbuilding for other fleet operators Andrew Goodwin also had his own Thames & Medway fictional fleet and kept some of his scratchbuilt models for use in this fleet. Thames & Medway was defunct some years ago but I recently acquired one of its former vehicles still in fleet livery from a subsequent owner. Number 166 (H154 TKT) is an 8.5m Dennis Javelin with a Duple 320 body, one of six of this type now in my ownership.

Worked a bit on a couple Engineering Corridor sectionals tonight. Nostrom - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. This image is simply a depth test....I replicated the first two panels I'm working on in Photoshop to see how it will appear when the complete physical framework is complete. Heh....I'm gonna need a bigger workbench LOL! #alien #nostromo #diorama #engineering #roncobb

A almost ready version of my new Chibi Yeti paper toy. I have to rework the fur texture a little. I was also thinking of making a box for him. The box will be like a ice cave.

this will be taken apart and stripped, i have no interior for it however going to scratchbuild the interior, and buy some wheels for this glazing i can easily sort out, but this should be nice when repainted and finished

Andrew Goodwin's scratchbuilds are usually easy to identify as they are labelled with serial numbers indicating the year of construction and the origin of the drawing used. I now have three consecutive examples of these short Javelins built in 1991, the new one being number 5. Number 6 was supplied to Arden Forest as J957 KNX and number 7 to the Mid Hants Group as H24 BCR. Each has different seating: H154 TKT has somehow had 39 seats crammed in, J957 KNX is a 35-seater with extra handrails for service work and H24 BCR has 33 seats and a toilet.

Build update to the MU/TH/UR 6000 chamber or "Mother" to the Nostromo crew - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale scratch build. Frame is primarily complete, with some additional structural pieces to be added, I'm ready to begin detail...panel by panel, square by tiny square. Also need some sculpting details to the portal. Talk about a test of patience.....oh well, I made this bed so I might as well sleep in it! LOL! - I'm actually going to begin work on the chair first, then a few panels...the I'm back at working on figures...I got some new ideas I will be sharing shortly as well as returning to some other, unfinished pieces that require my attention. Need to shuffle the deck every once in awhile. ‪#‎alien‬ ‪#‎nostromo‬ ‪#‎MUTHUR6000‬ ‪#‎diorama‬ ‪#‎scratchbuild‬ ‪#‎aliens‬ ‪#‎weylandyutani‬

This is a 1/20 Tornado from WF, I am scratchbuilding a variant of this in 1/35.

Build update on the MU/TH/UR 6000 "Mother" security corridor - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Sometimes the build requires creating pieces not seen and are made to simply give stability and bring together various parts of a diorama. Although the ceiling of the security corridor contains some detail, the main build of the frame's purpose is to plug in and hold the walls together. Nothing really fancy to show and I haven't added the ribbed detailing but hopefully you can see the progress I'm talking about. I've also included and exterior of the build from the MU/TH/UR entrance from the bridge, leading to the computer's chamber or "womb" as Sir Ridley Scott liked to call it. Looks a little similar to the actual stage build. I plan to create a nice "shell" that will cover this exterior build which will resemble the exterior of he ship and give that much more stability to the diorama. More to come! #alien #nostromo #MUTHUR6000 #diorama #scratchbuilding #diorama #corridors

Latest truck off the line is my first ever full scratchbuild - the Atkinson View-Line, based on the livery of a beautifully restored unit which is still in existence, although in a different livery.

Thanks for getting this looking like it should go to the guys who handled the original restoration without whose input I probably wouldn't have attempted the build.

One of the few advantages of being stuck at home during lockdown has been the chance to work on a few ongoing modelling projects. One of them has been to scratchbuild a Scottish Malt Distillers bogie polybulk wagon in 4mm scale.

I started this wagon a few years back and got sidelined with other projects. However, the recent release of the SMD polybulk transfers by Railtec has spurred me on to finish the wagon.

The starting point for the wagon is a HO scale Electrotren polybulk wagon, which has been used as the basis for the wagon body. The wagon has been scaled-up to 4mm by adding styrene card to the sides of the wagon and by constructing a completely new underframe. The hopper chutes, walkways and steps are all scratchbuilt. The solid handwheels and end ladder are recycled from the original wagon!

The plan is to paint it in the coming months and add more detail to the underframe, which are easier to add afterwards.

Whilst the model is not by any means perfect, it does look the part, which is what I set out to achieve, and has proved to be a very satisfying projetc.

The original style steps supplied with the kit are much different than the rebuilt ones. I will have to scratchbuild new ones for my models.

Bought from a totally unpainted built up kit. I had scratchbuild the missing tail lights, added side windows, and make a hood ornament . The chrome was very grey so strategically bare metal foil it .

A fun scratchbuilding project, more of which can be found on my RMWeb workbench thread

The piston really does move.

Seth like to scratchbuild his models and this is a neat little prototype of a late addition to the RI roster.

For the last twenty years or so, MBF member Frank Cumming has been scratchbuilding models of Alexander buses for fleet operators under the name of W. Alexander (Coachbuilders). Most scratchbuilt models are made from plasticard but Frank uses sheet steel and R34 ADL is an example of his ALX200 body. It was new to Southdown and passed on to Capital & Provincial Busways, but I acquired it from AJ Tours of Rugeley via at least one other owner. After repairs to some front corner damage it joined the Arden Forest fleet for the fictional Sunday service on the Stratford park & ride.
