This stand alone brick-built house with pantiled roof is very much of its time. A projecting string course divides the upper and lower floors, the window arches are highlighted to form ornate voussoirs with a keystone no doubt made from plastered over brick. The forecourt walls are shaped and capped to add style and a fine cast-iron boot scraper is built into the wall alongside the centrally placed front door. A chimney at each gable adds to the charm, making this the standard house as drawn by most children under ten! Note the fine astragals of the windows, the horns to the frames and the elongated window panes, all making this a quality build. A final note must be made of the date-stone that reads E.E. over the date 1855, located centrally placed under the eaves. But I can't stop there, the house appears to be one room deep making it a two up two down with possibly an outshut at the back. The pitch of the roof suggests the house was originally roofed in thatch or reed.

Funeral Stele: Athlete accompanied by a servant and his dogs

Pentelic Mountain Marble (Athens, Greece)

The young man holds in his right hand a strigil (scraper to clean the skin) and in the left hand the cords of a vanished aryball (small perfumed oil vase). Beside him, a young servant holds in his hands the end of the leashes of two greyhounds. The image is the synthesis of the ideal of the young Athenian citizen who is distinguished by the practice of sport (evoked here by the strigil and aryballe) and that of hunting, universe to which the two dogs refer.

Through the Scraper Bike Movement, we are taking Oakland youth culture or "hyphy" culture and using it for more positive public action. We are known for popularizing colorful decorated bicycles called "Scraper Bikes" that uphold the artistic and individual creativity of our youth here in Oakland. This past summer, we hosted a "Bike For Life" event calling out all of the "Scraper Bikes" in Oakland to ride around Lake Merritt. Through this and other events, we want to bring attention to the issue and solutions of street violence in Oakland.
