Funeral Stele: Athlete accompanied by a servant and his dogs - sign

Funeral Stele: Athlete accompanied by a servant and his dogs

Around 360-350 BC, Athens

Pentelic Mountain Marble (Athens, Greece)

The young man holds in his right hand a strigil (scraper to clean the skin) and in the left hand the cords of a vanished aryball (small perfumed oil vase). Beside him, a young servant holds in his hands the end of the leashes of two greyhounds. The image is the synthesis of the ideal of the young Athenian citizen who is distinguished by the practice of sport (evoked here by the strigil and aryballe) and that of hunting, universe to which the two dogs refer.

Purchase, 1911
