Scout headed right into the river to get a drink, then came right to me and tagged me with his sloppy wet mouth. I had this big wet circle on my chest the rest of the walk.
The Böker Scout is a well-proven hunting folder. The grip scales of the new variant "Splint" consist of semi-opaque resin with embedded aluminium chips. goo.gl/jeP3b3

The Bonfire Yell is one of the highlights of the annual Scouting Camporee. The boy scouts and girl scouts of SFAMSC show off their talents in dance, acting, and singing as they perform their cheers and yells exulting the values of scouting and challenging the other patrols to do better with friendly jabs that help spark healthy competition. To give their very best performance, each patrol dedicate many days to choreograph and practice their yells. This activity helps develop important life skills such as cooperation, teamwork, creativity, and the strength of character to be able to perform publicly. Audiences are usually surprised so see once timid and shy students shine and give it their all in the Bonfire Yell.

The world's oldest profession. Striking out toward the horizon and then coming back and telling the story to the tribe. Scout. Storyteller. Correspondent. Journalist.
This print is one of my favorites from the "Found Art" set. This guy was with the art prints of various Indian warrior portraits I retrieved from the moorage dumpster. This piece is different from the others--not just in tonality, but also in cultural accuracy. This fellow is a fusion of cultures--part Indian, part mountain man, part pirate, part pioneer, part pilgrim...
By defying identification with any one group, this fellow can represent Everyman--a searcher who travels seeking information--not just where water and game may be found on the trail ahead, but a metaphysical journey in a Morality Play from the Middle Ages.
I always identified with the guy in this print, and hung it by my desk at work. Heading out everyday, making pictures for news stories--never knowing what the events would bring, and what I might find next--that was great. The sorry state of the newspaper business these days, makes me wonder, will we continue to have the scouts out there, digging out important warnings and stories that we all need?
"Our scheme of society is more dependent than any other form of government on knowledge and wisdom and self-discipline for the achievement of its aims," said Chief Justice Felix Frankfurther. It's great to post eye-catching photos online, and I'm as guilty as any in sucking up the "info-tainment news"--but I wonder who will be attending those dreary city council meetings, and pouring over the fine print in the contracts and donor lists of political candidates?
Newspapering caught my imagination during the Watergate era, where the sleuthing of Woodward and Bernstein led to exposure of Tricky Dick Nixon. In my decades in the business, I got my share of fun--exciting, important stories and some amazing things. Most importantly, I learned the truism, the most important story you'll ever cover is that assignment that just showed up on your hook.
