In a park near my home, there is a narrow trail that connects two parts of the large valley park. I love taking walk here to have fun with manual and vintage lenses.

Belfast's tradition of political murals is a century old, dating from 1908 when images of King Billy (William III, Protestant victor over the Catholic James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690) were painted by Unionists protesting against home rule for Ireland. The tradition was revived in the late 1970s as the Troubles wore on, with murals used to mark out sectarian territory, make political points, commemorate historical events and glorify terrorist groups. As the 'voice of the community' the murals are apparently rarely permanent, but change to reflect the issues of the day.

The first Republican murals appeared in 1981, when the hunger strike at Maze Prison saw the emergence of dozens of murals supporting the hunger strikers. In later years, Republican muralists broadened their scope to cover wider political issues, Irish legends and historical events. After the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, the murals came to demand policy reform and the protection of nationalists from sectarian attacks. Common images seen in Republican murals include the phoenix rising from the flames, the face of hunger-striker Bobby Sands, and scenes and figures from Irish mythology.

Whereas Republican murals were often artistic and rich in symbolic imagery, the Loyalist ones have traditionally been more militaristic and defiant in tone. The Loyalist battle cry of 'No Surrender!' is everywhere, along with red, white and blue painted kerbstones, paramilitary insignia and images of King Billy, usually shown on a prancing white horse. You will also see the Red Hand of Ulster, sometimes shown as a clenched fist and references to the WWI Battle of the Somme in 1916 in which many Ulster soldiers died; it is seen as a symbol of Ulster's loyalty to the British crown, in contrast to the Republican Easter Rising of 1916. In this mural, quis-separabit means 'Who Shall Divide Us?'.

Made a DIY telescope by with paper and two magnifying glasses. Had to try and snap a photo through it. I'll experiment more with this in conjunction with my camera. Maybe I can trick some macro shots with it..?

Like others, I apply the marine-tex to bond on the underside of the mount bases while using release agent on the receiver and places I wish the bedding not to stick. Like bedding a rifle, I use clay to fill any voids where I do not wish the bedding material to go. Also like bedding a rifle, I use surgical tubing to hold the aligned 2pc base/ring combination into place while the marine-tex cures. This gives me a stress free and stable platform that eliminates any teeter-totter effect under hard recoil. From this I’ll perform the normal lap of the rings to obtain approximately 80% scope contact and then mount the scope.

The Dean NYC

Art Direction and Design by Will Burtin

The beaks of hummingbirds are covered with a skin, Fred told us. At first this skin is wrinkled to accommodate a larger beak as the bird matures. If you see the wrinkles in the beak you can be pretty sure it is a first year bird, and this one was. He also looked in her open mouth and it was yellow, which young birds have as a way of signaling their mother for more food (the male only mates, and then the mother builds the nest, lays the eggs, keeps them warm, then feeds the babies (they eat mostly protien (and even adults have 75% or so of their diet as protien, small insects and spiders) until they can feed themselves. Then she shoos them off to find their own territories.

After the first year, you can't look at the bird and tell how old it is, they all look pretty much the same. The average age is 3 to 4 years old, but there are records of 7 year old birds and even at least one at 9 years, amazing. If a bird has been banded, the information about when and where is in a database, so if a bird is recaptured, it is also possible to get an idea of their age and travels.

The Iota Lambda of Alpha Chi Omega at TCU hosted "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes"--an event to raise awareness about the seriousness and scope of domestic abuse. Katy Oliphint, the VP of Panhellenic and Philanthropy for AXO, delivered an excellent message to the hundreds of TCU students who gathered on the Campus Commons for the event.

What a great group of students--both AXO and the TCU men who participated in this relay race!

One last note: I can't say enough about how impressed I was with (1) how well this event was organized, and (2) how genuinely nice the members of Alpha Chi Omega are. No surprise really. I've heard others say the same.

This album is part of the event coverage for the Fort Worth Portrait Project. The project tells the story of Fort Worth from 2014 - 2044 one captioned portrait at a time, but I also enjoy covering events like this one too.

all of the windows appeared to be broken in exactly the same way.

At the top you can see where the upper portion of the handtruck will be clamped between two pieces of wood - a 3/8 threaded rod is cut to length to clamp these together.

You can also see the use of heavy-duty angle brackets to mount the top plate to the side members.

Taken outside the Scope. I combined two long exposures together to get the best of both photos. It may appear as the police car is in motion but it was standing still to alert traffic before the Norfolk Admirals hockey game at the Scope. I sat the camera down on the sidewalk and took the two shots as we waited for the light to change so we could cross. Some people had already began walking in front of the one exposure but they aren't visible in the shot as it was near the end of the second exposure.

Oddly there wasn't a changing room.

Apparently this technique works best with 12 threads + tiles / plates that have a groove at the bottom. Can create some very nice round shapes.
