An oasis in the middle of the city, the Schuylkill River Trail south of Walnut Street in Philadelphia is a contradiction in time and place. Walking between the serenity of the river and the railroad tracks, a person views people running, biking, fishing, walking up and down the trail through green surroundings. But the city is not far away. Graffitied old buildings and equipment remind you what used to be here. The neighboring oil-filled train cars are marked with warnings that dangerous toxic chemicals are not a thing of the past but are potential rolling threats to the health of hundreds of thousands of nearby residents. But on a beautiful fall day, the contradictions can be ignored as people take deserved time out to simply enjoy a brief respite from the many other problems on our tired shoulders.
