ODC ~ POV for 08.03.14

HSS!

A coal extra eases over the Peacocks Lock viaduct on their way to Reading.

The river is getting cleaner all the time - brave people actually eat the fish.

Where the river takes you.

I took these along the Schuylkill while walking back from the art store today.

I need it to snow. I feel like I brought the warm weather with me when I moved from California.

Why, HBW everyone!

Down by the good old Schuylkill (god I can never spell this!) River. I actually feel bad for the Philly students who never really go off campus and explore all of the wonderfulness of the night lights. Ahh <3 Philly.

When people think of big cities in this country it's easy to focus on the skyscrapers downtown, the surrounding residential neighborhoods, or the tourist attractions. This is certainly true in Philadelphia, where visitors may not stray far from the historical sites and many residents see more of the taillights of the car in front of them than much of the beauty of the city. However, just a few feet below the madness of the Schuylkill Expressway, the river of the same name flows freely and creates a scene that is both vibrant and placid at the same time. Nearly every evening, around the end of the workday in the spring, summer, and fall the jogging and biking trails along the river fill with people working off the frustrations of a long day at work or school, while the river itself is brought to life by the denizens of Philadelphia's famous boathouses. After years of passing through this scene as another commuter sitting in his car, today I stopped to capture a few moments of what my city looks like to those who stop to notice how marvelous it is.

Viewed from the Walnut Street bridge, CP/D&H combined trains 555/701depart Philadelphia. Today, the water tower has disappeared from the Locust Point building, and the National Publishing Company no longer advertises its presence in the adjacent structure. The view of the tracks is largely obscured by trees, and the townhomes to the right are in the shadow of a high-rise.

Conrail PIPG was crossing the Schuylkill River near CP Titus in Reading on a late winters afternoon in 1993. SD60M 5510 had B36-7 5050 and GP40-2 3403 along for the ride.

This morning was exceedingly dark along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, but I was determined to make a go of it, because blossoms are falling so fast that at times it looked like snow. I decided to post a detailed description of how I took this shot, which you can view here: outdoorphotographybyjackbooth.blogspot.com/2011/04/spring...

A tiny park along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

The Little Schuylkill River is a 30.6-mile-long (49.2 km) tributary of the Schuylkill River in northeast Pennsylvania in the United States.

It rises south of McAdoo Heights near Haddock, Kline Township in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, on top of Broad Mountain. It flows south, then southwest passing through the communities of Tamaqua and New Ringgold. The river joins the Schuylkill River near Port Clinton west of Hawk Mountain. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has designated several parts of the stream special trout stocking areas.
