Tundra Bean-Goose

Anser serrirostris

This goose is a strong rarity in the US, usually only appearing in Alaska. So to have one show up in the Philadelphia area was a huge deal. I tried for it a couple of times but missed both times. After the last time, it stopped being seen so I had thought I'd missed my chance.

So I was excited that it was seen again yesterday, and made plans to look for it this morning before the storm. I parked on Kelly Dr. along the Schuykill River and walked down toward the place where it had been seen.

Imagine my surprise - and joy - when I saw it not 5' in front of me on the shore with a bunch of Canada Geese. LIfer AND a nice shot!

One of the prettiest sunsets I have seen in some time. Very happy to have been able to capture it. From the famed Boathouse Row, a shot of Center City Philadelphia.

Another week, another NRFF7 chase... This week's edition of the Sunday Fast Freight consisted of R&N SD50M 5017, SD40-2 3050, SD50M 5049 and SD40-2 3055 with 62 cars for Pittston. Here they are as they cruise northbound under the former PRR Schuykill Branch at Hamburg. May 3, 2020.

Larry and I made our annual New Year's Eve mecca downtown to catch the fireworks display over Penn's Landing and have a sumptuous dinner at the historic City Tavern.

The crowds this year were light.

The brutal cold kept all but the hardiest individuals home this year.

It was pretty brisk standing on the roof of the parking garage with the perfect view of the festivities. It was a beautiful sight, but I'm glad the show only lasted 20 minutes! I was completely bundled from head to toe, but I don't think I could have stood it another 5 minutes!

How in the world do those crazy people in Times Square stay out there for hours and hours? Insanity!

After a terrific dinner we took the "scenic" route home.

Had to stop real quick at the little pull off on Martin Luther King Drive (it will always be WEST RIVER DRIVE to me!) and take a picture of Boat House Row all lit up in it's holiday best!

Having just returned from display in Schuykill Haven for Borough Days, CNJ 0-6-0 113 has run light through Cressona and and back up to her home on a stub of the old Wolf Creek Branch beside the circa 1913 Reading Railroad Minersville depot seen at left.

As for 113, she is a 1923 product of Alco's Schnectady works. Purportedly among the largest and heaviest class of 0-6-0 switchers ever built she is also one of only two surviving Central of New Jersey steam locomotives and the only one in operation, having returned to live in 2013 after a half century cold. Added to that rarity she is also the only anthracite burning locomotive currently in operation making her quite special on many levels. This page will take you to more history of the 113 with many great photos: www.rrproject113.org/cnj-113

Took a drive down I-81 South to Locust Lake State Park and Tuscarora State Park.

Since we didn't get a whole lot from those stops, we went back up our way and stopped at Frances Slocum State Park also.

Philadelphia Suburban "Bullet" 202 crossing the Schuykill River bridge at Norristown, 1960. The car is passing over the Reading tracks and an interesting Railway Express Agency siding; the DeKalb St. station is in the background. Both the Reading and the Pennsylvania had lines competing with the P&W for customers travelling to and from Philadelphia. The station is still in use today, now part of SEPTA's Norristown Transportation Center.

This is a print I purchased from Cliff Scholes; Cliff sold duplicate slides and prints and had all kinds of amazing stuff (like this one). I purchased quite a few photos from him over the years (back in the pre-internet days). I hope he's still around selling them, but I'm not certain.
