Reading and Northern local freight QADE (Tamaqua to Delano turn) has just finished their work at Stella Jones and is headed east crossing Morea Rd. at MP 4.6 on the RBMN's Reading Division - Morea Running Track. This rarely photographed branch is accessed via a 7 mile trip up the mainline to Haucks, then 6 miles up the Hazleton Line to Delano Jct., then reverse direction 3 miles to Morea Jct., then 5 miles out to this point high up on Broad Mountain. The elevation here is 1650 ft and amazingly less than three quarters of a mile to the north down below in the valley some 400 ft lower is the RBMN's Mahanoy and Shamokin branch thru Mahanoy City.

Those tracks far below are former Reading but up here on the mountain is former Lehigh Valley Railroad dating from before 1870 I believe, and in the last years of the LV this was designated the New Boston Branch. Interestingly the Pennsylvania Railroad also ran thru here as their Schuykill Branch connected with the LV in New Boston and they had trackage rights into Hazleton via this line and even ran a named passenger train from Hazleton to Philadelphia in the 1920s.

While the old Morea Colliery is but a memory Skytop Coal company up here still loads a car or two on occasion, but what sustains the line these days is inbound loads of poles for Stella Jones and pellets for Poly Plastics up the branch. Bracketing the train is RBMN 2012 on this end and 2011 on the rear. Both are EMD GP38-2s built with high short hoods for the Southern Railway in Sep. 1979 and Oct. 1976 as SOU 5256 and 5184 respectively.

One last cool item of note. See the large structure and smokestack on the right side of the frame? About 2 1/2 miles away, that's the 99 megawatt Schuykill Energy Resources St. Nicholas Cogeneration Plant. Built in 1999 it is burning the culm from the massive and long abandoned St. Nick Breaker which was once the largest in the world and stood until 2018. A statue of Grace Kelly's father, John B. (Jack) Kelly is seen beside a biker along the Schuykill River in Philadelphia.

More about Jack Kelly:

"...Though eventually outshone (at least outside Philadelphia) by his famous daughter, Jack Kelly was a celebrity in his own right, winning three Olympic gold medals in rowing. His son, John Jr., was also an Olympic rower. East River Drive was renamed Kelly Drive in his honor after John Jr.’s death in 1985. Now John B. Kelly III, known as J. B., is the president of Vesper Boat Club, at the midpoint on Boathouse Row..."

"...Boathouse Row is also the launching point for a public art walk, two and a half miles long, that goes up Kelly Drive and ventures over to the west side of the river before coming back. Besides Jack Kelly’s statue, there are about 30 other works of art, including statues of Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and a figure called “The Pilgrim,” with a Bible in his left hand, peering out onto a water as if catching a glimpse of everything that is happening on a busy river..."

Schuykill Banks Boardwalk

The land between the railroad tracks and the river becomes too narrow to continue the Schuylkill River Trail southward on land past Locust Street. To solve this problem, the City of Philadelphia and SRDC built a 2,000 foot long concrete structure running parallel to the eastern shore of the river from Locust Street to the new stair tower on the south side of the South Street Bridge. A 460’ long ramp also links the boardwalk to the north side of the South Street Bridge, providing ADA access and an easier connection for people with bicycles. This project provides an important link to the Schuylkill River Trail and Center City from University City and West Philadelphia.

The boardwalk’s 15’ wide pathway is supplemented by four widened overlooks that allow people to rest and enjoy the views along the boardwalk without blocking the trail.

Throwback to late August 2022, simpler times. With school just on the horizon and summer coming to a close at the time, it definitely was one of my best summer’s ive had, was full of ups and downs but nonetheless a really good year for me. So anyways about the photo: Earlier in the day me and M.B shot the WCGS job around the Goodspring branch with an SD38 leader. After chasing them back to Tremont we got a heads up from the Engineer that the WCNR crew would be on at 7pm. here we see the same WCNR heading south out of town at the Schuykill Haven station, few things i’d like to note here. The train in this photo has since been abolished with the PNMV/PNWC/PNPV crews bringing the cars back south in daylight, WCNR was mainly a night train. The train on this particular day was made up of loads brought down by the NSNX crew from the St. Nick mine up in Minersville, and two covered hoppers presumably from marlin. I didnt know it at the time but this would be the first and last time i would shoot this train, as i said it was abolished not long after.
