After traveling to Montreal in 2014 for Eurokracy, I’ve always wanted to return. But due to a busy schedule last year and some last minute plans changing, it didn’t happen. For 2016 though, it all came together and I was amazed at how the event has evolved in just two years to be the amazing weekend that it is now! Manneken Pis (Dutch for little pee man), also known in French as the petit Julien, is a very famous Brussels landmark. It is a small bronze fountain sculpture depicting a naked little boy urinating into the fountain's basin.
On many occasions, the statue is dressed in a costume. His wardrobe now consists of several hundred different costumes. The costumes are changed according to a schedule managed by the non-profit association The Friends of Manneken-Pis, in ceremonies often accompanied by brass band music.

Date first listed:12-Feb-1925
Reasons for Designation
A standing cross is a free standing upright structure, usually of stone, mostly erected during the medieval period (mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD). Standing crosses served a variety of functions. In churchyards they served as stations for outdoor processions, particularly in the observance of Palm Sunday. Elsewhere, standing crosses were used within settlements as places for preaching, public proclamation and penance, as well as defining rights of sanctuary. Standing crosses were also employed to mark boundaries between parishes, property, or settlements. A few crosses were erected to commemorate battles. Some crosses were linked to particular saints, whose support and protection their presence would have helped to invoke. Crosses in market places may have helped to validate transactions. After the Reformation, some crosses continued in use as foci for municipal or borough ceremonies, for example as places for official proclamations and announcements; some were the scenes of games or recreational activity. Standing crosses were distributed throughout England and are thought to have numbered in excess of 12,000. However, their survival since the Reformation has been variable, being much affected by local conditions, attitudes and religious sentiment. In particular, many cross-heads were destroyed by iconoclasts during the 16th and 17th centuries. Less than 2,000 medieval standing crosses, with or without cross-heads, are now thought to exist. The oldest and most basic form of standing cross is the monolith, a stone shaft often set directly in the ground without a base. The most common form is the stepped cross, in which the shaft is set in a socket stone and raised upon a flight of steps; this type of cross remained current from the 11th to 12th centuries until after the Reformation. Where the cross-head survives it may take a variety of forms, from a lantern-like structure to a crucifix; the more elaborate examples date from the 15th century. Much less common than stepped crosses are spire-shaped crosses, often composed of three or four receding stages with elaborate architectural decoration and/or sculptured figures; the most famous of these include the Eleanor crosses, erected by Edward I at the stopping places of the funeral cortege of his wife, who died in 1290. Also uncommon are the preaching crosses which were built in public places from the 13th century, typically in the cemeteries of religious communities and cathedrals, market places and wide thoroughfares; they include a stepped base, buttresses supporting a vaulted canopy, in turn carrying either a shaft and head or a pinnacled spire. Standing crosses contribute significantly to our understanding of medieval customs, both secular and religious, and to our knowledge of medieval parishes and settlement patterns. All crosses which survive as standing monuments, especially those which stand in or near their original location, are considered worthy of protection.
Despite having been partly restored the market cross at the junction of Bath Street, Union Street and Church Street, in Cheddar, retains some fine late medieval features. It provides a focal point at a junction of three roads in the town centre and is a highly visible reminder of the town's prosperous past.
Details
The monument includes a medieval market cross located in the town centre at the junction of Church Street, Bath Street and Union Street. The ashlar market cross which is Listed Grade II* was constructed in two stages. The initial stage of construction, dating from the 15th century includes a three stepped octagonal base surmounted by a socket stone which supports an octagonal shaft. The sides of the lower base step are 1.9m long and 0.56m high; the sides of the upper step are 1.1m long and 0.25m high. Each face of the socket stone is 0.45m wide and 0.9m high. The shaft is set into the socket stone and is square at the base, tapering to an octagon and crowned by a carved abacus with niches, each containing a sculpted figure. The second stage of construction took place during the 16th or 17th century and includes a hexagonal open arched structure which encloses the original cross. The six arches, formed by low buttressed piers, 1.9m apart and 3.2m high, support a solid embattled parapet which encloses a hexagonal tiled roof with wooden rafters through which the shaft passes. The original wooden rafters were replaced in 1834. Gargoyles with lead drainage pipes are mounted on each angle of the parapet. The present cross head was erected after 1877.

1 1/2" abs pipe used for rails secured to the roof 2x2s that are 16" on center. 2" schedule 80 conduit selves provide a gap for rainwater to escape. Galvanized pipe hanger and a self tapping set screw secure the assembly together. Metal roofing screws were used to secure the pipe hanger to the 2x2's that are 16" on center under the existing aluminum roofing. The rubber washer that came with the roofing screw was placed between the pipe hanger and the aluminum roofing to create a water tight seal. Mobile home tie down straps were used to create brackets to mount solar panels to the rails. Stainless steel bolts and nuts should be used to make the connections.
In the late 1960s, American singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist Gram Parsons became enamored of Joshua Tree National Monument in southeastern California. Alone or with friends, he would disappear in the desert for days exploring or searching for UFOs.
Before a tour scheduled to commence in October 1973, Parsons decided to go on one more excursion. Less than two days after arriving, Parsons died September 19, 1973 in Joshua Tree, California at the age of 26 from an overdose of morphine and alcohol. The amount of morphine consumed by Parsons would be lethal to three regular users and thus he had likely overestimated his tolerance considering his experience with opiates.
Parsons' body disappeared from the Los Angeles International Airport where it was being readied to be shipped to Louisiana for burial. Prior to his death, Parsons stated that he wanted his body cremated at Joshua Tree and his ashes spread over Cap Rock, a prominent natural feature there; however, Parsons's stepfather arranged for a private ceremony back in New Orleans and neglected to invite any of his friends from the music industry. Two accounts claim that his stepfather stood to inherit Parsons's share of his grandfather's estate if he could prove Gram Parsons was a resident of Louisiana, explaining his eagerness to have him buried there.
To fulfill Parsons' "funeral" wishes, friends stole his body from the airport and in a borrowed hearse drove it to Joshua Tree where they attempted to cremate it by pouring five gallons of gasoline into the open coffin and throwing a lit match inside. What resulted was an enormous fireball. Police chased them, but according to one account they "were encumbered by sobriety," and got away. Two of Parsons' friends were arrested several days later. Since there was no law against stealing a dead body, they were only fined $750 for stealing the coffin and were not prosecuted for leaving 35 lbs of his charred remains in the desert.
The site of the cremation was marked by a small concrete slab and is presided over by a large rock flake known to rock climbers as 'The Gram Parsons memorial hand traverse'. The slab has since been removed by the U.S. National Park Service and was relocated to the Joshua Tree Inn which was where he was staying at the time of his death. At the site of the original memorial now are simple rock structures and writings on the rock which the park service sand blasts to remove from time to time.
The exterior of London St.Pancras stands resplendent in the spring sunshine having been fully restored and cleaned. The Former Midland Railway terminus is now home to International 'Eurostar' trains from mainland Europe as well as East Midlands trains to the former Midland Railway heartland. Another new comer using platforms built beside the north end of the train shed is South Eastern High Speed with services to Kent via the High Speed line.
The Midland Railway was always seen as a 'provincial' operator by its near neighbours the GNR at Kings Cross and LNWR at Euston. So to upstage both the Midland Railway built this grandiose terminus in 1868 with a single span trainshed roof. The canopy roof was the largest in the world at the time being 245ft 6in wide and 105ft above rail height at its apex. The station frontage seen here was the Midland Railway Hotel now known as the 'Renaisance Hotel'. The Gothic building being designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and was completed in 1874. To think in the 1970's this fine structure was scheduled for demolition but survived thanks to the efforts of Sir John Betjamin who is remember in a bronze statue now standing on the former concourse.
