Bagan formerly Pagan is an ancient city from the 9th to 13th centuries,. The city was the capital of Myanmar. Bagan is one of Myanmar’s main attractions. It was the capital of Bagan empire, where Theravada Buddhism was the main religion. The area also known as the Bagan Archaeological Zone, occupies an impressive 26-sq-mile area. Marco Polo described Bagan as one of the finest sights in the world. Despite centuries of neglect, looting, erosion, regular earthquakes, not to mention questionable restoration, this temple-studded plain remains a remarkably impressive and unforgettable vision. Bagan’s kings commissioned more than 4000 Buddhist temples. The interior of Sulamani Temple – probably my favorite – is decorated with awesome paintings representing various religious scenes dating back to the end of the 12th Century. Because of the vaulted openings, the light filtering in this temple is lovely.
The beauty and richness of the archaeological site of Bagan, however, is not only in the pagodas and hollow temples’ beautiful structure and in the exquisite carvings. In spite of the damages inflicted by time, earthquakes and general neglect, the Sulamani temple on the centre of the photo houses stunning paintings that should not be missed. The temple seems to have been decorated since it’s building, in the 12th Century. The corridors inside the Sulamani temple are narrow and there’s not much light. Enough to admire the beauty and harmony of the wall paintings. During our visit to Bagan, we rented a bicycle and were allowed to drive along any Buddhist temple.

In 1975 zijn er echter veel tempels afgebroken bij een grote aardbeving in Myanmar en vandaag de dag zijn nog steeds niet alle gebouwen hersteld. Tijdens ons bezoek aan Bagan huurden we fietsen. We fietsen langs alle bijzondere boeddhistische tempels in Bagan. Het interieur van de Sulamani Tempel - in het midden van de foto hierboven - is versierd met geweldige schilderijen van verschillende religieuze taferelen die teruggaan tot het einde van de 12e eeuw. Vanwege de gewelfde openingen is het licht in deze tempel is prachtig. Ondanks de schade toegebracht door de tijd, aardbevingen en algemene verwaarlozing, huizen zich in de Sulamani tempel prachtige schilderijen die eigenlijk niet gemist mogen worden. De gangen in de Sulamani tempel zijn smal en er is niet veel licht. Genoeg om de schoonheid en de harmonie van de muurschilderingen te bewonderen maar onvoldoende om een goeie foto te nemen. Toch kon ik niet helpen een Boedha afbeelding van dergelijke onverwachte schoonheid vast te leggen.

Dieser Turm ist der höchste Punkt meiner Heimatstadt Cham.
Leider hat er eine traurige berühmtheit dadurch erlangt, dass sich viele Menschen hier das Leben nehmen.
Was wirklich sehr schade ist. Von oben hat man einen herrlichen Ausblick.
Sollte es tatsächlich Geister geben, wäre dies der passende Ort dafür.

The Royal Grand Palace is a complex of buildings at the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam and later Thailand since 1782. It consists of not only royal and throne halls, but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It covers an area of 218,000 square metres and is surrounded by four walls, 1900 metres in length. After King Rama I ascended to the throne in 1782, the palace was built. Prior to this, the royal palace and centre of administration had been located in Thonburi, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. For various reasons, the new King considered the former capital to be unsuitable and decided to establish a new capital on the other side of the river. Admission fee is free of charge for Thais and 500 baht for foreigners. You'll need to wear culturally appropriate attire when visiting the Grand Palace in Bangkok. This means being well covered. Visitors should wear long skirts/trousers and sleeved shirts—basically anything that covers more than the lower arms and head. Fortunately, after the covid period, it is not yet busy with tourists. Thailand has just ended their quarantine policy. Face masks are no longer mandatory. Great to visit the Grand Palace one more time now.
Impressive 200 years of royal history and architecture at the Grand Palace in Bangkok with more than 100 buildings. The Royal Grand Palace has been the official residence of the kings of Siam. It is the city's biggest tourist attraction and a pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhists. Most of the architecture, royal or sacred, is classified as Ratanakosin - old-Bangkok style. Two golden Phra Suvarnachedi are situated to the east of the terrace, flanking the steps leading up to the Prasat Phra Thep Bidon. The two Chedi's were built by Rama I to commemorate his parents. The two Chedi are almost identical. The structures are covered in copper sheets painted over with lacquer and gilded in gold leaf. Around the base of the Chedi, Rama V had figures of monkeys and yaksha giants supporting the Chedi. Each has four monkeys and sixteen giants around the sides. The colour and clothing of these figures identify them with a particular character in Thailand's national epics.

De twee chedi's zijn gebouwd door Rama I om zijn ouders te herdenken. De structuren zijn bedekt met koperen platen, overschilderd met lak en verguld met bladgoud. Rond de basis van de Chedi had Rama V figuren van apen en yaksha giants die de Chedi ondersteunden. Elk heeft vier apen en zestien reuzen rond de zijkanten. Wirklich schade, das der Bauer den Raps nicht bis an den Rand des Feldes gesät hat. Dafür kam der „HKM“ aus Duisburg Hüttenheim mit Lok 802, der letzten in orange von RBH. Hier auf die Minute pünktlich beim Fachwerkhaus in Flandersbach. Man beachte den Besen oberhalb der Puffer, den übrigens alle RBH G1206 mitführen.
A touch of rapeseed
It's a real shame the farmer didn't sow the rapeseed right up to the edge of the field. Instead, the "HKM" from Duisburg Hüttenheim arrived with locomotive 802, the last orange RBH locomotive. Eigentlich fast schade, nun hier weg zu fliegen, weil der Herbstwetter kaum schöner sein könnte, aber in Kroatien scheint hoffentlich auch die Sonne.
