Using the feedback from the larger group, the teams refined their ideas and tried to address any issues.
Veenhuizen is a small village in Drenthe surrounded by beautiful nature. The village is unique due to its numerous 19th century monuments offering visitors a mix of culture and nature. Veenhuizen is known for its juridical history due to its big state prison shaping the village and its inhabitants. The closure of the old prison enabled the village to create a museum allowing the visitors to experience the Dutch penal system of the last five centuries.
The village is however not located near the main tourist streams and therefore, accessibility has to be improved in order to attract more tourists to the area. As some prison facilities are still operational in the village, Veenhuizen has to adapt its cultural tourism so justice stays undisturbed.
To overcome these challenges the foundation Veenhuizen Culture & Tourism and the prison museum Veenhuizen have asked the ETFI to assist Veenhuizen in further developing tourism as a source of income by elaborating possible futures.
ETFI has started its scenario project on April 20th 2011with a presentation of Johan Kasper and Albert Postma for several stakeholders. In the upcoming months several workshops are scheduled to develop future scenarios for Veenhuizen.
Together with the village Frederiksoord, Veenhuizen is candidate for being listed as UNESCO world heritage. By preparing Veenhuizen’s strategic decisions, the ETFI scenarios are meant to contribute to the site’s new tourist policy.
