The Cathedral of the Most Holy Savior and of Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist in the Lateran (Santissimo Salvatore e Santi Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista in Laterano in Italian) – also known as the Papal Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran, Saint John Lateran, or the Lateran Basilica – is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome in the city of Rome and serves as the seat of the Roman Pontiff.

It is the oldest and highest ranking of the four papal major basilicas, holding the unique title of "archbasilica." It is the oldest public church in the city of Rome, and the oldest basilica of the Western world. It houses the cathedra of the Roman bishop, and has the title of ecumenical mother church of the Catholic faithful.

The current archpriest is Angelo De Donatis, Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome. The President of the French Republic, currently Emmanuel Macron, is ex officio the "first and only honorary canon" of the archbasilica, a title that the heads of state of France have possessed since King Henry IV.

The large Latin inscription on the façade reads: Clemens XII Pont Max Anno V Christo Salvatori In Hon SS Ioan Bapt et Evang. This abbreviated inscription translates as: "Pope Clement XII, in the fifth year [of his Pontificate, dedicated this building] to Christ the Savior, in honor of Saints John the Baptist and [John] the Evangelist." The inscription indicates, with its full title, that the archbasilica was originally dedicated to Christ the Savior and, centuries later, co-dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist. As the Cathedral of the Pope as Bishop of Rome, it ranks superior to all other churches of the Roman Catholic Church, including Saint Peter's Basilica.

The archbasilica is sited in the City of Rome. It is outside Vatican City, which is approximately 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) to its northwest, although the archbasilica and its adjoining edifices have extraterritorial status from Italy as one of the properties of the Holy See, pursuant to the Lateran Treaty of 1929.

The historic center of Rome is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The idea for this banner came from an email. It deals with statements made quite often and references to Biblical principles.

I shot this statue inside the Basilica. It was dark, therefore that ammount of noise.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This gargantuan cathedral now dominates the skyline along the Moscow River. It sits on the site of an earlier and similar church of the same name, built between 1839 and 1860, and finally consecrated in 1883. The church commemorates Russia’s victory over Napoleon. The original was destroyed during Stalin’s orgy of explosive secularism. Stalin planned to replace the church with a 315m-high Palace of Soviets (including a 100m-high statue of Lenin), but the project never got off the ground. Instead, for 50 years the site served an important purpose: the world’s largest swimming pool. This time around, the church was completed in a mere two years, in time for Moscow’s 850th birthday in 1997, and at an estimated cost of US$350 million. It is amazingly opulent, garishly grandiose and truly historic.

I used to see this van almost weekly parked in different spots in my neighborhood. I have not seen it recently, perhaps they were soo successful that they now have an office. Who knows?

The perfect snack while working on a long term paper - hot wasabe peas. A great, crunchy, little snack from my favorite country of Japan.

This photo was also an excuse to use my nifty new Nikkor 50mm F1.8 lens!

Also, btw - that is my ORIGINAL IBM 101 keyboard. I've had it and been using it non-stop since 1993 when I got my first 486. These keyboards are indestructible! After 13 years of non-stop use by a computer nerd and CS major in college, it is still in perfect condition! It's clean because the key covers come off and there is a plastic tray built in under the keys that catches any dirt making it easy to clean. The solid plastic it's built with doesn't stain or turn yellow with time either and the letters don't wear off. The simply don't make anything this sturdy anymore.

a must-have w/ me at all times. lol

St Saviors wharf near Tower Bridge is one of the few remaining places in London where you can still get a feel for how the docks must have once been. Obviously a lot less rat infested and dirty these days.

Stop, take a moment and enjoy the fine detail of natural beauty.

My styley danskos were the envy of the show floor. I think I'm the only one who didn't have sore feet.

The carpet on the floor in the halls to your cabin will help you know if you are facing fore or aft. If the map is right side up, then then you're facing fore, otherwise you're facing aft.
