the saviors of De Haan and a bunch of 'rescued people'

The Church of the Savior On the Spilled Blood derives its terrible name from the murder of Tsar Alexander I whose death occured under the stones where this church was built. It houses some of the most spectacular mosaics of any church on the planet, which is why I have posted all my photos of these masterpieces. This is religious art at its peak of perfection.

Most popular museum activity EVER.

Banner: Lent (2007)

“I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Made by Linda Austin Mary Funke, Mary Lou Luebke, Sharon Thompson, Kay Walters, Grace Zielske.

The colors of the series of banners for Lent represent a life cycle: green (spring-new life); purple (flowers in bud), pink (flowers in bloom), yellow (faded flowers), tan (wilted flowers), grey (lifeless), and red (blood). The cross and the crown of thorns depict the crucifixion. The wording is the seven things Jesus said while he was on the cross. The Lenten banners were made in memory of Richard E. Zielske.

"Isaiah 53 - The Man of Sorrows (rendered in pencil)

This unusual drawing was the result of a very interesting and vivid dream I had last night, Holy Saturday. I am calling this new drawing after Isaiah 53, which includes the following Scripture Passage:

"For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."

Church of Holy Savior, Bratislava (Hungarian: Pozsony, German: Preßburg or Pressburg, Medieval Latin: Posonium, Old Slavic: Prešporok ), Slovakia

The city had various names during its history. Internationally it was called Pressburg because of its German name. The name Bratislava was created in 1837, but it only become the official name after WW1. (Some local residents tried to rename it Wilson City during the peace negotiations after WW1.)

Hungarians conquered the early Slav settlement in the 9th century. This castle became an administrative center of the Kingdom of Hungary. The city became the capital of Hungarian Kingdom during the Turkish wars. Several administrative functions were moved to Buda in the late 18th century. Part of the Baroque city, including the Grassalkovich palace, was built in this period.

The Slovak nationalist movement was also born here. The first Slovak novel and newspaper (Presspurske Nowiny) were published here.

Part of the historical city center (like the National Theater) was built during the years of prosperity in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Bratislava became the political center of Slovakia during the First Czechoslovak republic. It was declared capital of First Slovak Republic almost 20 years later in 1939. After WW2, by the recreation of Czechoslovakia, it become the most important city of Slovakia. Almost 30 years later Czechoslovakia was federalized and Bratislava became the capital of the Slovak Socialist Republic in 1968. Following the Velvet Divorce, Bratislava become the capital of Slovakia.

Philly hands over Savior

It's that time of year again - The Silent Messengers are once again performing "Celebrating A Savior". The next few weeks take us to local churches and one weekend road trip. Once again I had a different place to sit giving a slightly different perspective. Here, he was standing directly in front of me.

During this performance, there is no speaking - either on stage or off. Cast members are "prayed in" and give up their voices allowing their actions to do the speaking. The red dot is a symbol of having given up their voice.

Haghpat monastery complex was founded in the X century.

The monastery has a complex plan. It consists of several buildings, some of which are connected by covered galleries like this one, called "The Savior's Passage", which connects the library depository and the St. N'shan church. It was also used as the monastery academy. The gallery extends around the east end of the church and opens into the courtyard with a view to the mountains and village in the distance.
