Didn't go to Costa today this time though!
Saving the world from mediocre coffee.
This past week was busy and yet still somehow uneventful. This minimalist photo was sort of minimal in the effort department as well. As I sat Sunday night, nervous and without a photo for the week, I had to make like an egg and scramble. So I grabbed a bottle of wine to settle me down. To photograph, not to drink, that is. Wine often makes a good subject. Though this shot doesn't really capture much about the wine or the bottle, the emblem does contain a lot of meaning. This bottle was a gift to my wife and I from a couple great friends of ours who we don't get to see very often anymore. So not only is it important in that way, but it is also from our favorite winery in California. We normally only crack open one of these bottles for a special occasion. We plan on saving this one until we book our next trip to see those friends, which means hopefully we won't be saving this for too long! (I hope to be opening it this week!)

I have a fear of being skint. I don't like debt (not including mortgage) and I try to save as much as possible every month. Thankfully I have never been in a worrying position and hope that will always be the case.
I haven't shared this secret before as I worry people would think I was shallow and/or materialistic, it's neither of these just a want to always be able to provide for my girls and know that we have a back-up should it be needed. (It may also be the fact I have a desire to spend and when I was in my teenage years would spend far more than I had???)

I did not spend too much on my Christmas decorations this year, due to al the moving expenses and need to have some to buy presents for the gandkids, etc. (I am saving this beautiful day for Christmas Day and that will be a nice gift........it was cloudy and rainy earler!)

A bill proposing a complete overhaul of the current Forest Code in Brazil, first issued in 1934, was approved by the lower House of Congress last May. Despite additional changes to the text by Senators, the bill approved by the Senate this month still includes damaging allowances that will open the Amazon up once again for rampant deforestation. The text has been sent back to the Chamber for a final vote - to be completed in the coming days - and then it will go to Dilma for presidential signature before final approval. The changes in the forest code will open the Amazon up for dangerous deforestation. If confirmed by Dilma, the new law will also compromise the international agreements Lula signed during the Climate Conference in Copenhagen, in December of 2009, committing Brazil to ambitious CO2 emissions reduction targets.

A few days ago, I was at the emergency room waiting for lab results of one of our patients. I had my dslr with me at that time because I was showing it to my colleague who was interested in getting a dslr also. Around 3:00 in the morning, a mother was carrying her baby into the ER. The baby who was around 1 month old was in respiratory distress and the lips were already turning blue. The baby was then brought to the pediatric area of the ER where he was intubated.
It turned out that the baby had several days of fever with some difficulty in breathing. The parents did not bring the baby to the hospital thinking that it would just go away and they were also thinking of the cost of seeking medical help. By the time they had brought the baby to the hospital, he already had a severe case of pneumonia.
Fortunately, the baby's condition was stabilized and he was admitted into the pediatric intensive care unit.
Disease does not choose the persons they infect. They do not know age, sex, or social status. As physicians, we try our best to help people get better from their ailments. And yet there are limits to our skills and knowledge. Athough our intentions seek to save lives... it is only God who trully save lives.
Whenever I come across an earthworm in the wrong place, I usually touch it to see if it's alive. This one was, so I found a little stick and placed it into a shady batch of soil. After a few moments, it started to head back into the soil.
I saved a life! Alas, but the bird must go hungry for a bit longer.
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, jointly with UNICEF, lead the largest global programme to accelerate the abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). In line with Zero Tolerance Day for FGM on 6 February 2017, UNFPA lead a mission to Kenya's Narok County to document UNFPA’s active participation to encourage the abandonment of the practice. Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, involves altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It negatively impacts a girl’s psychological, emotional and physical well-being, education, health and gender equality rights, and is internationally recognized as a human rights violation. Maasai culture, often praised and used as a tourist attraction, encourages FGM which is views as the key to success in all aspects of life. Many Maasai families cannot afford to give their children formal schooling, so to protect their daughters from lives of poverty, they choose to marry them off at a young age. Because Maasai girls are traditionally considered children until they are circumcised, it is seen as imperative for a Maasai girl to undergo the circumcision rite before she is married making FGM a precursor to child marriage. This strongly ingrained cultural belief propels families to go to great lengths to complete the circumcision. Both FGM and child marriage negatively impact long-term poverty reduction and development outcomes. In collaboration with World Vision Kenya as an implementing partner UNFPA identify Narok County in Maasailand as one of eight targeted counties in Kenya where UNFPA-supported interventions are transforming and saving lives of women and girls in the county.

Wrapping up our work at the long-lost Anderson Cemetery today, we finally righted the spire. It'd been so long hanging in precarious position, would've been a shame to let it fall. You never know what's in a rush, what's settled solid or just about to tumble to the ground. At the end of our effort, we unearthed 5 small stones with initials, and 3 large ones to match. First there was J.A. and C.A. for parents Joseph and Clarissa, also named on the spire. Then there were twin sets of A.A.A. for son Alfred Augustus and daughter Annah Augusta – who also have larger stones, snapped off their respective bases. Finally, there was a second J.A. most likely for a son, John. Another broken base may have held his larger counterpart, but we couldn't locate the remainder. It took a few colliding factors to tell this story. Some manual effort, an urge to uncover forgotten places, and the childhood memories of Maynard Jodrey to show the way. We've cut in a path from the field to the west, so folks can park by the public mailboxes, and slip into this secret grove. All in the service of some thin vale of Anderson family history, pulled back from the brink.

The overall scene at Hopton where they are supporting the cliffs to prevent erosion. Half of the scene was in deep shadow and I was some distance away. Quite a difficult take.
While traveling south in search of his father Ingvar finds a man half engulfed by the earth.
Rollo: Help! I’m sinking!
Ingvar: Hold on I’ll get you out!
Quickly Ingvar searches for a rope or something to save him but all he could find was a snake.
Rollo: That’s a snake!
Ingvar: I’m sorry friend but it’s the only thing I could find.
Rollo: Ah, what the heck… A snake bite isn’t as bad as death.
Ingvar Pulls him out with little effort and then hurls the snake towards the woods right before it bites him.
Rollo: Thanx lad, I would have certainly died if it weren’t for you. Me names Rollo.
Ingvar: My pleasure Rollo, I’m Ingvar. I don’t suppose you’ve seen anyone else out here?
Rollo: Aye, there was a band of folks that I met a while ago, they had a prisoner with ‘em.
Ingvar: Where were they heading? I have been trying to track down the people who kidnapped my father.
Rollo: They went towards Falkenborg. Here allow me to take you.

It took about an hour to clear the brush around Saunders Cemetery, perched between the highway and the railbed, just east of my hometown. All my life, I've been passing it by, headed out from Bridgetown to Paradise, but I never spotted these stones in limbo. They've been buried under summer, grown in with shoots from neighboring trees, and plenty of young hawthorn. I pricked myself on the menacing spines, barrier against invaders like me. All that wild tangle is easy to tame if you start from the bottom, reach in with the right tool and keep your hands clear. Everything must go, save for the trees that were babies when the bodies were buried. They can stand until they fall.
It wasn't any big effort to make, just the least I could offer to a town that made me. I'm clearing a path to a crumbling history, cornerstones of early settlers, forgotten where they fell. There's more than 100 cemeteries in Annapolis County, but at least 25 of them are abandoned, derelict and overgrown. One quarter of our history, out of our sights and minds. I can't save it all, but place to place and case by case, I'm doing my best to make sure we remember. Saunders, Chesley, and Woodberry, planted along the railbed gone silent. Waiting on their one last stop, on the trip from dust to dust.
