How do you transport a queen cell? Keep it vertical; no jarring, Don't chill and don't leave in direct sunlight. The cell wants to be just about body temperature. Some carry the cell vertically in a shirt pocket. Today I wasn't wearing a shirt pocket, so I taped it to my chest. #climateaction #beekeeper #pollinators #beekeepersgram_feature #hives #om #bee #insects_of_our_world #insects #protectthebees #beesrule #beesofinstagram #lovethybees #savethebees #saveourbees #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise.

March Against Monsanto - Tucson, AZ

I only lasted about 2 hours - did the walk and heard a couple of speakers; the heat was too much for me. But I must say, it felt good to be involved and see all the young people taking action!

Peace and real food for all!

When nectar is in short supply or unavailable, bees draw on their honey stores in the hive. During these times, it is important to frequently monitor the amount of honey in the hive because when it has all gone, the colony will starve. Starvation can be prevented by moving bees to an area where plants are yielding nectar or by feeding them white table sugar. There are differing views about the correct amount of sugar in syrup. Some beekeepers prefer a ratio of one part of sugar to one part of water, measured by weight (known as 1:1).

Finding a dead hive is discouraging. This is three out of four dead hives, but I'm not giving up, bees need our help more than ever. We have a bee to thank for one in three bites we eat. . Bee populations are declining around the world, a phenomenon known as "Colony Collapse Disorder". It's caused by a variety of factors—pesticides, drought, habitat destruction, nutrition deficit, air pollution, global warming and more. Many of these causes are interrelated. The bottom line is that we know humans are largely responsible for the two most prominent causes: pesticides and habitat loss.⠀ . Our latest blog from our friends at Save Our Bees has great tips about what you can do to help prevent Colony Collapse Disorder >>> act.gp/2s2zhs7⠀ . American Foulbrood (AFB), a highly contagious disease, is among the top honeybee killers in the world. Caused by a bacteria called Paenibacillus larvae, it can wipe out an entire apiary if not contained. This bacteria is spore-forming, meaning it can survive extreme environments and antibiotic treatments and still be viable after 70 years. Because of this, it can easily be spread from hive to hive by bees or beekeeping equipment. Today I'm mailing about 100 dead bees to researchers at @brighamyounguniversity to check if my beehive has AFB. Additionally, the samples of dead bees will help researchers develop better options for treating AFB.

Another shot from Hall Place near Bexley village.

I think I was a bit lucky with this one as this isn't a macro lens - indeed, it is only the 16-50mm kit lens on my Sony A6000 - and there was a breeze making the lavender flowers sway all over the place. I must have (nearly) caught focus as it was passing through.

If you look closely you can just see the shadow of the bee's tongue through the lavender petal.
