Have a Great Tuesday Ya'll..:)
Waiting for that moment the Bee's came back to the flower. Probably waited longer than I should have for this shot but I loved how the buttercups in the background where creating lovely golden bokeh balls.
I pulled this one out of the canal and I'd read about giving them sugar water, so I did 😁

A few weeks ago, while walking through a local park, I noticed an owl nesting box that had been taken over by honey bees.
The last time I was at the park, I walked one of the paths and found 3 more. I was happy to see how much the bees like these boxes, and thought how easy and inexpensive it would be to put these out in quiet places near gardens, and hopefully provide homes for more bees. If the bees don't claim it, there are many birds who would--making it a win/win for everyone.
Anything that we can do to help the struggling bees would be a good thing, and making it easier for them to create new colonies would be a great thing.
I don't know the logistics of the style or make of a 'bee box' that might be better, but I'm sure there are many who would know....
Just putting this idea 'out there' as one of the many positive things that each of us can do to help the bees.
The 1st box on the upper left is the one I originally found, and posted a few weeks ago. Each of these was in a different location, and high up in a shaded area--making it not that easy to get a clear image....
The last one on the lower right had a large honeycomb attached to the top of the box, and it was visible from where I stood.

When nectar is in short supply or unavailable, bees draw on their honey stores in the hive. During these times, it is important to frequently monitor the amount of honey in the hive because when it has all gone, the colony will starve. Starvation can be prevented by moving bees to an area where plants are yielding nectar or by feeding them white table sugar. There are differing views about the correct amount of sugar in syrup. Some beekeepers prefer a ratio of one part of sugar to one part of water, measured by weight (known as 1:1).

Did you know that offering a stranded bee on the ground a little sugared water you will save it's life. They fall to the floor dehydrated and are unable to find the strength to re hydrate. If you ease their head onto a spoon of water they will drink plentifully and you will feel remarkably satisfied when they eventually fly off. Try it :)

--The Heart of the Rose is the Bee...
I was just reading that the Bumble Bees and native bees are also diminishing in number---not just the honey bee. I have seen this myself--especially in the last year..
We are connected to the bees---as we lose them, we are losing a part of ourselves.....

The Common Carder Bee (Bombus Pascuorum) is one of our most common bumblebee species in Ireland. The species is quite distinctive and once it is seen, it cannot really be forgotten. It’s also very lucky that it does not have many confusion species, currently just one in Ireland and that is The Moss Carder Bee (Bombus muscorum) which is another very distinctive species. It is present in most of Europe in a wide variety of habitats such as meadows, pastures, waste ground, ditches and embankments, roads, and field margins, as well as gardens and parks in urban areas and forests and forest edges.
The thorax of the common carder bee is either yellowish or reddish-brown in color. The hair of the first four abdominal segments are gray in color, while the hair of the fifth and sixth terga are yellowish or reddish-brown in color. Queens appear between early April and mid-May, and workers appear at the end of April/early May to mid-October. Young queens and drones can be found from mid-August to late October. When queens search for suitable places to nest, they fly just above the vegetation, for example on forest edges, investigating cavities such as holes in the ground or niches in dead wood and grass. The nests can be constructed above or under ground, preferably in old mouse nests, but also in bird nests, barns, and sheds.
The common carder bee is polylectic, feeding on a variety of wild flowers, including nettles (Urticaceae), genuine motherwort (Lamiaceae), Himalayan balsam (Balsaminaceae), cabbage thistle, knapweed (Asteraceae), vetches, red and white clover (Fabaceae), monkshood (Ranunculaceae), fruit trees, etc. (wikipedia)
This Common Carder Bee is feeding on Purple-loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) at a site near Ballymun, Co. Dublin that is sadly going to be developed with the loss of a very important habitat that hosts nationally important numbers of species.
I came across this meadow of wildflowers today whilst out and what drew my attention was the size of the poppies. I have been looking to get a photograph of these flowers for some time

A sugar board, also known as a candy board, that is used as a food source when your honey bees need winter food. Honey bees need plenty of honey to get through the cold winter months. They have ample food sources during the warm months but rely on their stores of honey in the winter. When they don’t have enough honey stores, honey bees can starve to death. A sugar board is a simple solution to keep your bees thriving until the weather warms up. Sugar boards consist of a frame, hardware cloth, sugar and an entrance hole for your honey bees. The candy board is installed on top of the beehive.

A bit about bee poop. Bees are very tidy creatures who won’t poop inside their home. In chilly weather, bees need to eat more to generate heat. It doesn’t take a degree in physiology to know the more you eat, the more you poop. Or, well, the more you need to poop. If you’re a bee and trapped in your hive because it’s too cold or too wet out to fly, um, yeah. This may be why bees are so grumpy when you open up the hive in winter–no one is happy when they’ve really got to go. Bees that have to hold it in too much poo for too long basically run the risk of poisoning themselves with their own waste. So, the second it’s warm and dry enough, bees are rushing out of the hive to go. You can almost hear them letting out a collective, “Ahhhhh.” #climateaction #beekeeper #pollinators #beekeepersgram_feature #hives #om #bee #insects_of_our_world #insects #protectthebees #beesrule #beesofinstagram #lovethybees #savethebees #saveourbees #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise
Even in the healthiest of colonies, bees die every single day in winter. If you consider that your healthy colony may have 50,000 or maybe even 60,000 members going into the fall but may have only 20,000 come spring somewhere along the line you lost 30,000 to 40,000 bees. That’s a bunch. Just for giggles late, I’ll take the smaller colony 30,000 and divide it by 182, which is the number of days in October, November, December, January, February, and March. That gives me 164 bee deaths per day. The larger colony number of 40,000 gives me 220 bee deaths per day. Of course, these numbers are approximations. Nearly every day I walk up there (for my benefit more than theirs) and I flick the dead bees off the landing boards. What I’ve noticed is that a new pile of bees every day is a signal that all is (potentially) well inside. Only a healthy colony has the beepower to dispatch undertaker bees to clean up the bodies. On warmer days they fly them off and drop them on the ground, but on colder days they just shove them out the entrance. #climateaction #beekeeper #pollinators #beekeepersgram_feature #hives #om #bee #insects_of_our_world #insects #protectthebees #beesrule #beesofinstagram #lovethybees #savethebees #saveourbees #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise.
Honey bees' wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz.

Today I introduced a ripe queen to the bee colony that I split yesterday. Cell came from Treasure Valley Beekeepers Club (TVBC). TVBC is in the sixth season of a cooperative association with the Apiary Program of the Washington State University (WSU) Entomology Department. The WSU breeding program is focused toward developing honey bee stocks that exhibit a measure of resistance or tolerance to common honey bee pathogens and parasites. This is one of many programs designed to enhance US honey bee diversity through importation of honey bee semen from Old World sources, evaluation of progeny and release of germplasm to the queen production industry. #climateaction #beekeeper #pollinators #beekeepersgram_feature #hives #om #bee #insects_of_our_world #insects #protectthebees #beesrule #beesofinstagram #lovethybees #savethebees #saveourbees #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise.
