From Laochang Springcake Restaurant (老昌春饼) in Changchun. These springcakes are much like mushu pork - a dish which I thought did not exist in the PRC. The filling on the left is fried red peppers with pork and bean sprouts. The filling on the right is saurkraut with pork and onions (classic dongbei).

You're a mean one, Mr. Jazz.

You really are a heel.

You're as cuddly as a cactus,

You're as charming as an eel.

Mr. Jazz.

You're a bad banana

With a greasy black peel.

You're a monster, Mr. Jazz.

Your heart's an empty hole.

Your brain is full of spiders,

You've got garlic in your soul.

Mr. Jazz.

I wouldn't touch you, with a

thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.

You're a vile one, Mr. Jazz.

You have termites in your smile.

You have all the tender sweetness

Of a seasick crocodile.

Mr. Jazz.

Given the choice between the two of you

I'd take the seasick crockodile.

You're a foul one, Mr. Jazz.

You're a nasty, wasty skunk.

Your heart is full of unwashed socks

Your soul is full of gunk.

Mr. Jazz.

The three words that best describe you,

are, and I quote: "Stink. Stank. Stunk."

You're a rotter, Mr. Jazz.

You're the king of sinful sots.

Your heart's a dead tomato splot

With moldy purple spots,

Mr. Jazz.

Your soul is an apalling dump heap overflowing

with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable

rubbish imaginable,

Mangled up in tangled up knots.

You nauseate me, Mr. Jazz.

With a nauseaus super-naus.

You're a crooked jerky jockey

And you drive a crooked horse.

Mr. Jazz.

Sherri and I had dinner at our favorite Irish pub tonight. The menu for the evening consisted of

Garlic-stuffed Mushroom Appetizer

Sausage platter with knockwurst, bratwurst and wurstwurst accompanied with mashed potatoes, saurkraut, broccoli and carrorts. Served with whole grain mustard and Irish brown bread.

Washed down with an Old Brogue Pale Ale (which came in 76th at the 1998 World Beer Championships).

By the way, this is the dinner that keeps on giving. Its 5 hours since we left the restaurant but this meal is still with me, if you get my drift. :D

It gets me mad when people feed bread to wildlife. Its crap food...especially white bread. Its not healthy and not healthy for them, but they eat it of course, along with the ducks, raccoons, and squirrels. I have seen deer eatting oranges, pineapples, pumpkin,, spaghetti, roast beef sandwiches, .....all strange foods to these herbivores.

At this popular deer watching site, people dump saurkraut, donuts, candy, popcorn, wilted salads with the dressing , pizza, and anything else they don't want to eat. In summer, the trash sours quickly and stinks. Yet, people continue to dump their unwanted food rather then toss it in the garbage can. People also leave dog food for the raccoons, and hard boiled eggs, and cat food in cans.

Apples are Deer's favorite natural treats along with acorns, and corn of course. Oh, they love to eat hostas and tulips....so don't plant them in deer inhabitated areas. The Humane Society of the Unitied States has lists of flowers and plants that deer don't eat....check with them before you landscape.

Sauteed Breast of Local Pheasant

Braised cabbage & apple, foie gras, and pickled ginger ($28 a la carte; this is the 3-course tasting menu portion)

Notes: This was probably my favorite course of the evening. This was another very Germanic presentation, with the braised cabbage and the sweet, crisp apple. The pickled ginger added the hit of acid that stood in for the saurkraut, and helped cut through the small bits of luscious foie gras.

Our now-traditional choucroute garni, with homemade saurkraut, (!) by Dietsch

Some guy asleep on the bench outside of Hey Hey bar in German Village.

I was walking my dog and couldn't resist this picture.

Pardon the blur, but I was afraid he would wake up and not be too happy that someone was taking his picture.

It was my birthday, and I really wanted to go to Harold's. We hadn't been in forever. Here are two foot-long hot dogs, baked beans & saurkraut to go on them, and a giant knish, all for me. Also some fried kreplach in the foreground.

Every time we go, we vow that we will make it to dessert. And every time, we are SO not even able to think about dessert. I don't know how other people do it. Next time, next time...

Stuff your face at Harold's New York Deli in Edison, New Jersey, near New Brunswick.

Yummy! Delicious red paprika sausages, very nice in a baguette with German type mustard. The paler sausages are more like the German Bratwurst. A must try at the Christmas Market in the Old Town Square, Prague.

There are also sausage carts on Wenceslas Square that do a steady business of feeding those on the go throughout the day.

Sides include bread and saurkraut. Hot, filling, and easy to take with you, sausages are a favourite Prague street food.

yummy!! all you can eat sauerkraut hot pot

Lomito sandwich. I think this had roast pork, saurkraut, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and of course mayonaise.

Avert your eyes, gentle vegans!

This is sort of a take-off on a dish mom used to make, which I suppose was itself was a take-off on northern Italian dishes like beans and escarole. (Slovenia, where our family came from, is on the Italian border).

She used saurkraut, I roasted up cabbage with a French cut onion, raisins, and this and that mixed up with the Pinto beans I simmered while it roasted.
