This is cropped sample of the not-so-sharp photo from the new lens. Those shots that I got yesterday looked nice...but they aren't sharp. They were also reduced to 4x6. I don't want a lens that's going to force me to resize all of my images or it's useless to me. I want a lens that gives me sharp images straight out of the camera. No resizing required. In comparison to my 90mm/f2.8 macro, which isn't even a Di lens, this is not sharp at all. Small details are lost with this lens, which is the whole point of macro photography.
So after feeling terribly frustrated after my dry run with the new lens, I came home and decided to do some more tests with it. First I cleaned my sensor. Twice. It was so disgustingly dirty. Then I did shot test shots with both the flash and with my studio strobes. And a tripod. Tried various settings. I still got the same results.
I talked to a camera store friend who said that I probably got a soft focus model. It does happen. Of course, with my luck, it would happen to me. So tomorrow I will be going back to the camera store in hopes that they will replace it. And I am not leaving that place until I am satisfied with the results that I see. I was hoping to have this for my Portland trip (on Wednesday!!).
This shot is one of those that I took with the strobes last night. This should be the sharp part of the image, but if you view this full size, you'll see that it is not. *sigh*

First sample pictures taken with the new Canon Zoom Lens 70-200mm 1:2.8 L IS II USM, and Extender EF 2x II. They were taken at approx 1 meter away, and they were at 400mm zoom. By far the best lens I ever owned. The focus is crystal clear, and extremely fast.

Set of 3 oil samples (valued at $12.00), which have also been handcrafted by me. Oils included are the 2009 Cottonwood, St. John's Wort, & Yarrow Oils. The Cottonwood buds were gathered locally by me & Tony in May 2009. It's red color comes from the resin contained within the buds. This is the reddest Cottonwood oil I have seen. I attribute it to just the right conditions...snow on the ground with blue sky & the Sun overhead. The warmth of the Sun's rays causes the resin to flow into the buds. The Yarrow & St. John's Wort was grown without pesticides by me in our cottage garden. The St. John's Wort was picked on Midsummer. Oils come packaged in an organza bag with an information sheet. A great stocking stuffer!

This is a sample of one of the more than 20,000 segments of painted stainless-steel ball-chains in the public art installation for the new Johnson County Courthouse. Ball-Nogues Studio worked with a computer-controlled machine of their own design to aid in the meticulous process of cutting the chain into segments and linking them in precise order.
