Frozen melted salt containing the Jackolite phosphor showing different concentrations of manganese. Melted on aluminum trays on a limestone platform.

Using the upper left sample as the standard concentration:

the upper right sample contained ~1/4 Mn,

the lower left sample contained ~1/6 Mn

and the lower right sample contained the same amount Mn but ~1/3 NaCl.

Suspected phosphor: CaS:Mn,Pb in NaCl

Contains:

CaS:Mn,Pb (FL+PHOS! Blue/Pink,Orangish Pink, Pinkish Orange, Orange >UVa,b,c)

Li2CO3 (added as flux)

Shown in phosphorescent state after exposure to UVabc light.

Key:

WL = White light (halogen + LED)

FL = Fluoresces

PHOS = Phosphorescent

BL = 450nm,

UVa = 368nm (LW), UVb = 311nm (MW), UVc = 254nm (SW)

Wolfbarb Project

After speaking at the Royal B.C. Museum (RBCM) in Victoria, Jennifer Lash donated coral samples gathered during the expedition to the museum’s collection. The RBCM will make the corals’ data available to researchers worldwide through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. British Columbia’s cold water corals can then be compared with samples in other museums for DNA or chemical analysis and other changes over time.
