India tiger safari trip.

Our last national park, Corbett.

VIDEO OF MY TRIP

Jim Corbett National Park, which is a part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve, a Project Tiger Reserve lies in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The magical landscape of Corbett is well known and fabled for its tiger richness. Established in the year 1936 as Hailey National Park, Corbett has the glory of being India's oldest and most prestigious National Park. It is also being honored as the place where Project Tiger was first launched in 1973. This unique tiger territory is best known as the father who gave birth of the Project Tiger in India to protect the most endangered species and the Royal of India called Tigers.

The sambar (Rusa unicolor) is a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent, South China, and Southeast Asia that is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat.

They are favourite prey of tigers and Asiatic lions. In India, the sambar can comprise up to nearly 60% of the prey selected by the Bengal tiger. Anecdotally, the tiger is said to even mimic the call of the sambar to deceive it while hunting.

The ‘Sore Spot’ is a unique feature found only among the sambar. On the ventral surface of the sambar’s neck is a line of hair which is darker and less sleek than the surrounding pelage. This runs down the mid-line from the throat to the lower part of the neck. During the rut, which occurs from November to December, the hair falls and the skin sloughs off giving a circular area about an inch to two in diameter a bloody appearance. This area exudes a fluid and is commonly called the ‘sore spot’.

An institution is not to be respected unless it commits to owning a heterogeneous fleet of oddball JDM minitrucks.

It was great to see a fully grown male with beautiful horns (although he could use a shower:)). Not the easiest thing to get a clean shot of these robust deer because they don't like vehicles stopping around them. This guy gave me a few seconds before running away.

This doe is considerably smaller than the males and like most species of deer does not have antlers.. This individual was photographed in Gir National Park which was set up to protect the only asiatic lions left in the wild.

About Sambar:

Sambars prefer the dense cover of deciduous shrubs and grasses, although the exact nature of this varies enormously with the environment, because of their wide range across southern Asia

The sambar (Rusa unicolor) is a large deer native to the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The appearance and the size of sambar vary widely across their range, which has led to considerable taxonomic confusion in the past; over forty different scientific synonyms have been used for the species.

Sambar are found in habitats ranging from tropical seasonal forests (tropical dry forests and seasonal moist evergreen forests), subtropical mixed forests (conifers, broadleaf deciduous, and broadleaf evergreen tree species) to tropical rainforests. They are seldom found far from water. Sambar primarily live in woodland and feed on a wide variety of vegetation, including grasses, foliage, browse, fruit, and water plants, depending on the local habitat.

Brand new for 2024 and quite literally looks good enough to eat! Who doesn't love Tomica and who doesn't love cake, put them together and what a sweet combination ;-p

Cleverly utilising their Subaru Sambar mini truck it has a large plastic cake on the rear which can be covered up by a separate box which replicates the kind of packaging used in patisserie bakeries.

I thought this was rather sweet - it had acres of room inside. And the fake VW style was fun.
