The Parish Church of St Mary

 

Rye is a medieval fortified town in East Sussex, originally a Cinque Port the town sits a few miles inland from the coast on the River Rother.

The parish church is dedicated to St Mary and was built between 1150 and 1180.

In Julian Stockwin's book "Invasion", Thomas Kidd went to the Mermaid Inn, so we dropped in for a drink and a look around.

The rye harvest is just around the corner

Not really a harbour anymore,well not for the last 4-500 years. Rye was one of the Cinque Ports protecting the south east coast of England from invasion. It is now 3 miles inland after the currents formed shingle banks, which are still expanding. Rye Harbour itself is a small village which was formed about two hundred years ago on the shingle banks.
