Formerly part of a slate mine Rydal Cave now attracts a good number of visitors. It can be found a short walk above Rydal Water or if like us you can take a longer stroll from Ambleside. We incorporated our visit in an eight mile circuit of Loughrigg Fell.
Access is relatively straightforward although the Lake District authorities do suggest that you keep out of the cave as large rocks have periodically fallen from the roof.
One strange aspect is the presence of a large shoal of minnows that appear to thrive in the cave pool. There are hundreds of little fish up to three inches in length. Quite how they got there I'm not sure. That being said I do understand that it is possible for birds to visit and inadvertently carry fish eggs on their legs.
Which opens on a big view after the walk through the woods. Which is nice. The immediacy of a 50mm lens.

During our short holiday in England we visited also the Lake District for 2 days. On our way from Kendal to Buttermere we passed by the Rydal Water. What an amazing spot with all those reflections. We were very lucky that day. I had seen many beautiful reflection pictures of the Buttermere, but the 2 days we were there the wind was much too strong. Rydal, 2023.
