What is it about a solitary bike? That brings questions to mind?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUUSDAvp-rM&list=PL9p74hFDlLR... - Eddie Harris, "Half and Half" (The energy of the song seems to fit the underlying energy I felt in this scene of abandonment, waiting and wanting, for someone to back. To help with a groovin' rebirth come spring. Fix that tire and...ride off: cool and smooth.)
But as for now, why do such bikes always look so lonely? Locked up and seemingly abandoned, the lock used to hold it in place is now worth more than the bike itself.
Are its days of carefree abandon and gaiety gone? Once and for all?
Will its owner return to reclaim it? Did he get “stoned” one night and forget where he left it? Did he get sick or die? Why do I assume the owner is – or was - a he, even though it is a girl's bike? Probably as I’ve never known a woman to lock up or abandon a bike. :-)
When he returns will he simply look at the flat tires and the rust and say, “to heck with it” and leave it for the scrap heap?
Will it ever again be freed from this lock-and-rack, free to roll once again along the lakefront on a summer evening: passing sexy women of all ages in various stages of exposure? Will its tires cut through puddles of rain, making that “shishing” sound as rubber separates water, splashing it onto the sidewalk and grass?
Have you ever ridden full-bore down the road on a bike, wind in your hair, rain in your face, hell bent for leather to a song like this, knowing a slightly nasty fall was probably waiting for you in your near future? Join the club; and should you survive - wasn't it grand?
I believe they called that "ride to your po-tential, boy!"
Anybody got some sandpaper and some Rustoleum?
Looks like it might have been a nice bike at one time.
