Old Miners Cottage

This is a photo of an old miners cottage that was on my brothers property in Beaconsfield, Tasmania when he purchased the land. It had to be demolished to make way for a new house he is building himself.

I am happy I was able to get a photo of it before the bulldozers came in as I felt it had a lot of character.

Probably our biggest bargain find, this is actually a hutch that you would hang on the wall. We desperately needed a sideboard of some kind in the kitchen to house cookbooks and some cooking magazines. It appears to be handmade and was originally in not-so-great condition. The outside was just a blah stained wood finish, pretty worn out, and the inside was painted a dull white. The bottom drawers just had tiny brass knobs. Price? $2. Painted the inside a bright white with paint we already had on hand, and scored the perfect red for the exterior from the "oops" section in the hardware store... for $1. The new knobs are a great red and turquoise damask pattern that I picked up a few weeks prior from Michaels on a whim for $1 each. It's slightly top/front heavy when empty and we need to secure it to the wall soon (all because it's made for the wall, not the floor), but all told, not to shabby for $7!!

To celebrate Barbara's birthday, we spend the night in rustic Deventer. It's a bit of an open air museum, full of beautiful restored houses and cobblestone streets. We liked it but after two days we longed for an underground techno party in a moist bunker. :)

An open surface awaits to become the place to set whatnot, be it used on a bedside table, bathroom counter or countless other locations around the home. The open pine slab forms the base of this outdoorsy catch-all functional lamp. A birch bark shade casts a subtle glow down the white birch stem, canoe paddle and onto a diminutive pack basket stuffed with a traditional Hudson's Bay blanket. The piece stands a mere thirteen inches.

The back's lumbar support and neck rest are shown here in the full upright position for reading or casual conversation. Four other angles are achieved, three of them by repositioning the oak backrest rod at the various armrest stops. This rustic furniture piece is the first of the winter 2021 - '22 crafting season. A matching footstool is already on my woodshop crafting list as the snow flies in the months ahead.

Rustic Falls has been called many names including West Gardiner Falls and Rural Falls. It received its present name in 1879 from Superintendent P. W. Norris who wrote of a “rustic fall upon the West Gardiner.” The small creek does not carry much water so the show is not one of force but of delicacy. The water spreads over the surface of the rock to descend in a thin lacy sheet to the rocky base.
