This is one of the most delicious coffeecakes I’ve ever made. The marriage of fresh raspberries and basil is perfect and was inspired by a delicious raspberry-basil jam I purchased from a lovely auberge in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. To make it even more special, I made a rich cream-cheese frosting which I flavoured with fresh lemon zest and vanilla.

Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or afternoon tea in the garden!

I've got a ruby red desire

Like a virus like my last hope

I've got a ruby red desire

I've got to hear the red bird sing

I've got to rip this cord

And rinse this lazy blood

Clear a path and walk away

I've been waiting for the sky to fall

I've been thinking I could lose it all

I've been waiting for the safety net

Tell myself that I'm not ready yet

And every memory's a dream

And each uncertainty reminds me why

I saw a kid outside playing by a moongate

Making paper things that fly

I've been waiting for the sky to fall

I've been worried I could lose it all

I've been waiting for the safety net

Tell myself that I'm not ready yet

I want to live

I want to live

I want to live

- Heather Nova, 'Ruby red'

And then this happened...

There's definitely something going on with this pitcher!

The frame is packed edge-to-edge with rounded translucent glass pieces. The dominant forms are large, soft-edged, pebble-like masses rather than sharp shards.

Visible colors include:

* Cobalt blue: large glowing piece near upper right.

* Emerald green: broad piece at lower left-center.

* Ruby red: several pieces at upper left, right-center, and lower right.

* Frosted clear / white glass: central dominant oval.

* Amber / peach glass: upper center.

* Aqua and pale blue: lower center and side areas.

* Yellow-green: upper right edge.

* Violet / deep blue: right side and background pieces.

The central frosted white piece acts as the main visual anchor. It is surrounded by saturated color, so it reads almost like a glowing stone or moon against a field of artificial gems.

The surfaces show small pits, scratches, dust, fibers, and scuffs. These marks are important because they prevent the glass from looking like polished plastic. They give the image tactile age and scale.

Discussion as art

This works as a macro abstract still life. The subject is simple, but the close framing removes ordinary context and turns the glass into a field of color, texture, and light.

The composition is dense and frontal. There is no empty space. That creates a compressed, mosaic-like effect, closer to stained glass or a mineral cross-section than a conventional still life.

The central white glass piece is important. It interrupts the saturated colors and gives the eye a place to rest. Around it, the blue, green, and red pieces form a strong color structure:

* Blue gives cool luminosity and depth.

* Green adds weight and mass at lower left.

* Red adds heat and visual tension.

* White/frosted glass provides tonal balance.

The image is less mysterious than the darker version because the lighting is more even and explanatory. It shows the glass clearly rather than hiding it in shadow. That makes this version more about surface, color, and material evidence, while the darker version would read more dramatically as glowing abstraction.

As an art photograph, it has a synthetic-beauty quality: beach-glass language, but with colors too concentrated to feel fully natural. That tension is useful. It sits between nature, craft material, mineral specimen, and pop-color abstraction.

Focus stacking

Focus stacking is well suited to this subject. At macro distance, a pile of rounded glass has many depth levels: foreground surfaces, central pieces, partially hidden pieces, and rear fragments. A single exposure would not keep this much of the scene sharp.

The stacking appears to provide:

* Broad sharpness across the central white glass.

* Readable texture on the red, green, and blue pieces.

* Clear surface abrasion and pitting.

* Good separation between overlapping glass edges.

* A flattened but highly detailed macro field.

The image has the characteristic look of a successful stack: more depth of field than a single macro frame would normally allow, but still with some natural softness in buried or edge areas.

Possible stacking artifacts to watch for:

* Halos along bright glass edges.

* False sharpness around translucent overlaps.

* Small dust specks becoming overly crisp.

* Local contrast exaggeration on frosted surfaces.

* Slightly artificial transitions where curved glass overlaps another curved piece.

Here, the stack is effective because the main surfaces are sharp without making every background edge equally aggressive. The central white piece, green piece, and large blue piece are the key areas, and they hold focus well.

Technical discussion

The lighting appears to be transmitted or backlit, probably with light coming from below or behind the glass. That is why the pieces glow internally rather than merely reflecting surface light.

The exposure is brighter and more open than a low-key glass study. Highlights are strong but mostly controlled. The central frosted white glass is close to the brightest area, but it still retains texture rather than becoming a blank white shape.

The image benefits from the combination of:

* Frosted texture.

* Transmitted color.

* Close macro framing.

* Deep focus from stacking.

* High local detail.

For a cleaner exhibition version, selective retouching of dust and fibers would help, especially on the red upper-left piece, the central white piece, and the blue upper-right piece. But the dirt and abrasion also support the object’s material identity, so removing all of it would make the picture less physical.
