RHS Hyde hall

15th October 2020

Yesterday I bundled up in our colder temperatures again and went for a three hour walk in the woods. I was delighted by the songs of the new birds that have arrived in our area. Many of them were the early Warblers. But among them was the Ruby Crowned Kinglet. I was delighted when he perched briefly on these Ruby red branches close to me. He is a cute little guy. His red crown can get brighter if he is upset. It would be neat to capture that. However, I was glad he was in a good mood, too.

Enjoyed seeing this jewel-toned ornamental lawn wind spinner sculpture in action.

Three seconds long...

The battered glass stone of a steel tension ring that originally belonged to my Mum magrit k.. At one point, it got a little too small for her, and since it's made of steel there's no such thing as widening it easily like a silver or gold ring, so she gave it to me :) My Mum must have bumped against something one or more times while wearing the ring which resulted in this cracked dent that, to my delight, almost looks like a 💗 when seen in close-up; there's also some wear and tear visible on the brushed steel.

And yes, this glass stone is "three seconds" in diameter. Due to the lack of a close-at-hand ruler (and a distinct laziness in fetching it from the desk), I used the seconds marks of my automatic Citizen watch to measure the stone's diameter. The three seconds translate into 4 mm/0.157 inches.

Technical info: single shot illuminated by two LED lamps (left and right) and my LED Lenser flashlight set on "Spot", handheld from above to highlight the heart-shaped "Wear and Tear".

HMM, Everyone! I'll catch up with you later!

These are the attractive ruby berries of the Guelder Rose growing wild in the meadows. Although they are mildly toxic to us folk the birds just love them.

Happy Smile on Saturday!

Macro Mondays theme: B-Food

Not so perfect cross section of a beetroot, backlit using an impromptu homemade Lightbox and off-camera flash to boost the intensity of light from underneath to produce and enhance that beautiful ruby red colour. HMM...

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" on the 8th of March is "collage in a square", so a collection of pictures put together to make a single picture, in this case in a square format. When it was my birthday a few months ago, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. This set me off on my latest passion: photographing haberdashery still life. In this case I have used the same corner of a hand embroidered doily accessorised with a spool of cotton in one of the four colours used to embroider it. All four images recreate the full image of the doily, which I thought made for a great collage in a square. I hope you like my choice for the theme, and that it makes you smile.

Was in the backyard the other day, with camera, just looking to see what I could see.

Was very surprised to see this "bay" azalea, growing under the pine trees, glowing red in the dappled sunlight. All our other azaleas bloomed several months ago, so perhaps this little offshoot, of a nearby larger one, wanted to show off before summer arrives?

KP Index is an indication of Aurora activity level. 7.6 is very high and we lucked out on my last night. This shot is a 2-seconds shutter speed and ISO 500, which are very low settings. I was often shooting over 10-seconds. The photographers will know how much brighter this is than average.

Freida is a Fashion Friend play doll by Ruby Red Galleria.

The dress is made by me from a sewing pattern by Forever 18inch called "The Versatility Dress" (found on pixiefaire.com).

Sometimes I feel the urge to sew for a new doll without having to go through the time consuming process of designing the pattern myself, so I'm very glad we can purchase online sewing patterns for our dolly needs. That dress took about 1 hour to make, so that's good good good.

My first attempt at the "book, ring, heart shot". I've always admired others' creations. I'm not thrilled with this version-- had many other ideas, but ran out of time. So I think this will be my card for my husband for Valentine's Day. And it's my wish for all of you to celebrate love in your life, in whatever way it reaches you. Have a great Valentine's week-end.

Took this outside, with sunlight, as my Canon Powershot does not take great in-door photos. But had thoughts of playing around with light through red tissue paper, red flowers on the page, etc. This is my engagement ring, with a ruby. I love it. I also had hoped to find a book of poetry, but grabbed Montaigne essays instead. The poetry books did not open well. Then the text seemed too distracting-- so I tried it upside down- still distracting, so finally just blurred the text in photoshop. I only had 10 minutes at lunch to try this shot, but it was a fun experiment.

Other versions of my card attempts below.
