The Wellington Statue, by Carlo Marochetti, erected 1844.
Raised to commemorate Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, at the Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow.
Since the 1980s the statue has frequently worn a traffic cone (courtesy of late-night pranksters); occasionally the horse does too.

One nice touch from the authorities as they prepared the city for the influx of Spanish football supporters: they left the traditional traffic cone on the head of Wellington's statue outside the Gallery of Modern Art - perhaps they even straightened it up!

Glasgow iconic Duke of Wellington statue photographed at Royal Exchange Square.
A Glasgow landmark which allegedly costs the council £10k a year to remove the cone.
This 1840s equestrian sculpture of Wellington sits in the middle of Glasgow by Royal Exchange Square, in front of the Gallery of Modern Art (previously the neo-classical Stirling Library).
By tradition Glaswegians display their sense of humour and irreverence for 'great' authority figures by climbing the statue and placing a traffic cone on the Iron Duke's head. This practise has been going on for several decades and these days the authorities have not only given up trying to stop this folk tradition and effectively turn a blind eye to it. It has become an icon of the city, with Lonely Planet guides counting it in their top ten of bizarre public monuments in the world. I love it. I see on this particular day his horse has his own traffic cone.

It's not that I have anything against Rogano and from what I've heard the food is excellent, however since I'm not a huge fan of seafood then I'll probably never eat there. On another note, the now closed Borders shop on the left is one place I have eaten, well I have had some food in the Starbucks there. Gemma shocked me when we were at the Starbucks there one time. It was the first time we went on an unofficial date and Gemma stole her Starbucks mug.
Gallery of Modern Art
The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) is the main gallery of contemporary art in Glasgow, Scotland.
View looking down one side of Royal Exchange Square with the gallery on the left. The Square is bedecked with fairy lights over the Christmas period.
Possibly the most iconic image of modern Glasgow, Baron Marochetti's 1844 equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington has so often been crowned by a traffic cone that the city authorities have now accepted its permanence.
It stands outside GOMA, the Gallery of Modern Art in Royal Exchange Square which was designed as a private house in the late 18th Century, and subsequently has been a bank and the eponymous Exchange.
