A canopy of lights from the Gallery of Modern Art in Royal Exchange Square. Glasgow

The Young Man was clothes shopping in Glasgow, so I met him after work and we went for an early dinner as MrH was rehearsing. We had a lovely evening (he had pizza and rasperry ripple ice cream, I had penne piquante) and then tootled off home on the train.

Bits of decorative stonework lying in a corner of Royal Exchange Court in Glasgow city centre. There doesn’t seem to be any building work going on here and they don’t seem to with the architecture of the immediate area - a small mystery 😀📷

Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow

Standing between the tall pillars of the Gallery of Modern Art (formerly the Stirling Library) in the heart of Glasgow.

This 1840s equestrian sculpture of Wellington sits in the middle of Glasgow by Royal Exchange Square, in front of the Gallery of Modern Art (previously the neo-classical Stirling Library).

By traditions Glaswegians display their sense of humour and irreverence for 'great' authority figures by climbing the statue and placing a traffic cone on the Iron Duke's head. This practise has been going on for several decades and these days the authorities have not only given up trying to stop this folk tradition and effectively turn a blind eye to it. It has become an icon of the city, with Lonely Planet guides counting it in their top ten of bizarre public monuments in the world. I love it. I see on this particular day his horse has his own traffic cone.

Glasgow city council in there infinite wisdom have banned people dressed as goths from the square...nice to see that the council are dealing with the big issues in glasgow...like social deprivation...violence....

Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow

We went out to celebrate Gemma's last ever uni exam. I wanted to get the good old clichéd shot under the mesh of lights at Royal Exchange Square. I know a few people have done this in the last few months but hey it's still pretty.

Gemma demanded that it also be known as Clever Wife. I'll let her have this one given that she has done her last ever exam.

Pity about the accumulation of unnecessary street furniture messing up George Square.

I saw this woman with her luggage and appreciated the fact that it looks like she is sitting in ancient Greece or somewhere like that in her modern clothes making her look a bit out of place.

Fantasically lighted Royal Exchange Square in Glasgow. Every winter they put up a ceiling of lights adding to a very festive atmosphere.

In the picture is the GoMA, Gallery of Modern Art, also lit up beautifully.

a few city snaps.

In Royal Exchange Square outside the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art and forming an end to Ingram Street is an equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington by Italian artist Carlo Marochetti, erected in 1844. Capping the statue with a traffic cone has become a traditional practice in the city, claimed to represent the humour of the local population and believed to date back to the first half of the 1980s if not before. The statue is a Category-A listed monument and due to minor damage and the potential for injury that the placing of cones involves, the practice has been discouraged by Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Police in recent years. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_statues_in_Glasgow

Raised to commemorate Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, at the Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow.

Since the 1980s the statue has frequently worn a traffic cone (courtesy of late-night pranksters); occasionally the horse does too.
