the rowing machine......
for WAH who are visiting cogs and gears.
I couldn't get a better shot as there is stuff all over it!
48/116 - chain
Just several of the many positive attributes I lack…..
Damn… #2 son just pointed out that I also lack good technique. I think I'll throw the ungrateful little degenerate out on the street.

52 weeks of fitness - Week 1
OK just did 5k on the ergo (Concept 2 Rowing machine). Completely knackered now.
Decided to do the 52 weeks of fitness thing that Abe kicked off. Sadly the group is oversubscribed, but I decided I may as well do the work anyway. Nothing else seems to motivate me to exercise regularly... and if flickr (or rather the flickr community) can motivate me to do a 365, then perhaps it will work to get me fit.
[Edit - some folk now left the group, so now I am committed]
I do need to get fit.... I'll be 50 next year & I'd rather enter my fifties fit than pathetic, else it will be downhill rapidly from there.
There was a time when I was fit.... I used to do alot of rock climbing, running etc (In fact I've run 4 marathons), but those days are long gone..... killed by age, apathy & injury.
Anyway I have a much neglected ergo (Rowing Machine)....bought because I cancelled the expensive gym membership I didn't use, and theoretically the ergo would be much better value for money. Actually all it did was lose money in a single large lump sum & then collect guilt thereafter. I do use it, but rather sporadically.
So in order to get fit I have decided to do 2 things...
1) a minimum of 2 sessions of ergo a week (or real rowing on the river when conditions allow)
2) The hundredpushups program that Grace identified a few days ago... so far done the exhaustion test (a measly 12) and Week 1 - Day 1 session (10+12+7+7+9)
Also for TOTW - Feelin' fit
I am now a gym person. I never believed I would be, but there's a gym across the road from where I live, which has turned out to be perfect. The equipment I had always assumed would be impossible for me to use is now all part of my workout: the cross trainer, weights, cable row, the dyno, treadmill and the rowing machine. Today was my sixth visit.

#4802 - 2021 Day 53: Carolyn's shoes abandoned on the rowing machine after not much time or distance ... or maybe I'm doing her a disservice and she just reset it :-)
After all of those up close lighting experiments I just wanted to move the camera away a bit today. Take in the whole caboodle for a change. Fortunately the garage floor was mostly dry this morning - after all the rains yesterday evening flooded in under the door.
Reminder - must sort out the drainage...
How many more weeks did that groundhog say we had to wait until spring? Several years ago I remember getting out on the water on March 1st. By what's happened over the winter so far, we may have 18 inches of snow this March 1st. Oh well, at least I have this. I'll splash water over me and curse the plants behind me pretending they are motor boat operators wanting to run me over like they do every year. Spring will surely be along sooner or later. ;~)

moments after rachel finished rowing a few thousand meters, nick walked over and asked if he could do a workout, so we strapped him in and he cut loose. there's no variable resistance on this thing, its only geared for an adult rower -- but nobody told him that!

So, I'm back at work and planning on regaining my coke-bottle figure for the new year. 25 minutes jogging and a few situps later and I decided to play around with the cameraphone while collapsed as a sweaty mess under a rowing machine.
Then I undo the good work the next day.

What seems like an age ago, I was a young 20-year-old undergraduate at Harris Manchester College, Oxford. When it came time to join a sports team, rowing seemed the obvious choice. I mean, when in Rome right? I had friends who chose Cricket instead, but as well all know, that's just a poor man's baseball.
Anyway, when returning to the States, I was all ready to buy a racing scull ( www.levator.com/rowing_shells/boat_details.php?boat_id=80 ) ...but I was soon to be leaving for Sweden and there was a question as to how much time on the water I would get, not to mention the cost investment.
So instead, I went for a rowing machine that was as close to an 'on the water' experience as possible. Instead of a fan moving air to cause resistance, this machine has a blade within a tank of water. As you pull, the blade moves against the water. Want a harder row or the effect of a heavier boat to pull? Just add more water.
Today is all about getting back to making some serious headway on what was started back in Day 32.
