I remember this view fondly as a little boy when we used to stay at my Grandmother's house in Barry. At bedtime, rather than go to sleep, I would watch steam engines shunting up and down this stretch of line and see the ships in the docks. I am showing my age now but probably circa 1963-1964. Interestingly, the view hasn't changed that much with the exception of a much reduced railway infrastructure and hardly any ships. That said, I was pleased to capture this scene today which brought back fond memories.

66198 waits for the green signal to proceed to Newport ADJ with empty bogies having unloaded its cargo of containers at Barry Docks (6B39). There is a daily chemicals train from ADJ to Barry with containers, which originate from various locations including Southampton, Tilbury, Portbury and London Gateway. Acrylonitrile is one of main chemicals transported, an important monomer used in the manufacture of plastics. The chemical tanker Bergstraum, can be seen berthed at N02 Dock quayside, discharging her chemical cargo to the Dow Corning plant, situated just out of sight on the left. She was built in 1996, sails under the flag of Norway and her gross tonnage is 6,045 tonnes. Meanwhile, 66114, working the 4C95 Aberthaw - Cwmbargoed coal empties passes the ADJ train.

Most rooftops in marrakech are for relaxing and to catch a little breeze in the hot summer months. Most restaurants and cafe's have a rooftop for the view and the breeze.

Day 331 [11-26-2016]

A night of Urbex. Most of the day I spent by myself. I was around people constantly for the past few days and it kind of stresses me out over time. I needed some time to think out loud, write a little bit, and also work on some stuff that has been on my mind. I tried doing some filming while I was out but I wasn't able to find the piece of equipment that I needed to complete the shoot so I put a halt on it. I was about to settle in early for the night when Scott messaged me asking if I wanted to go out so I decided to go on an adventure. We were trying to figure out places to go when I remembered a place that we went to a while back on day 138 of my daily blog. Scott was the only one who actually went onto the location at the time while I sat back and watched. This time, we both went up there and the view was fantastic! What a way to end the night.

I can't wait to see what the next day brings!

Gorgeous day to lounge on the rooft

Alexandria, Egypt

Rooftop living looking out from the hotel dining terrace and restaurant.

A bit less crowded than Cairo and no where near as dusty, Alexandria is a coastal city with the beauty of the sea and the massive and ancient Citadel, a new museum dedicated to Cleopatra and the findings from her palace in ruins, beneath the sea. Much to see and many things not retrieved from below the water of the port...a shame.

Rooftops and the long view at dawn, Paris, France

The photograph of this view was a result of a couple of coincidences. I have to admit that we rarely got up this early on our trip to France (or the UK, or New York, or Germany...), more often sleeping in and finally getting out the door of our room at 10:00 in the morning or so. We kid ourselves about our ability to adapt to time zone changes — we think we didn't make it quite all the way to Europe but instead locked into a time about one zone west of Ireland! But on this morning we had no choice but to get up very early since we were scheduled to take an early train to Germany and we didn't want to miss it.

But being up before dawn wouldn't have quite been enough to give us this view. There is a hotel story involved, too. When we arrived earlier in the week we were given a room several floors lower. We went up to the room, opened the door, walked in... to find a pack of cigarettes on the bed, suitcases on the shelf, and clothes in the closet! The hotel upgraded us as a result, putting us in a room that was near the top of the building and which gave us a view across Paris. So, up at 6:00 in the morning, still fairly dark in Paris, we got dressed and then watched the light show as the sun spread across the city.

A test shot from the century-old 1A Autographic Kodak Junior. From the roof, because, why not? I’m not sure if that’s a light leak in the upper right, or damage to the old roll I had to pull from a jammed Hasselblad back a year or so ago(thought it was a roll of 400 Delta, but, surprise, after shooting, it was 100). Five shots per roll of 120, four of them pretty good (one accidental double exposure). A little more tweaking and this will be a nice landscape camera. Aperture on the camera set at No. 8 (which is f11.3) at 1/100. I held a yellow filter in front of the lens.
